Who reads vows first?

Nay, on July 31, 2014 at 12:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

I wrote our own vow renewal ceremony by piecing together different vows from renewal vows I found online, and I'm looking over and finalizing and can't figure out who is supposed to read their vows first, me or Hubby.

We're also writing our own vows and Hubby is good with writing (he used to write poetry), so I'd rather go before him and not have to follow all his eloquent words. lol

Does it really matter who reads their vows first?

My hubby read his first…we just went with how the pastor directed us so I guess that must be correct Smiley smile Not sure if there's a wrong answer though or a reason behind it. Getting close Nay!

For a wedding I think usually the guy goes first, as a symbol of initiating the relationship. Since you're already married, I don't know that there's a rule. And honestly, I can't remember if I've been to weddings where the girl went first. I was at a 'marriage celebration' (they had eloped a few months prior) a couple months ago, and I think she went first.

I went first. Not sure if that's against tradition.

Rachey - Yup. It's super close. 23 days Smiley smile

Jenn - Good point. We're married already. Not like it has to be "official" Smiley smile

    JuneBride - lol Smiley smile

Matt - That would be me. I'm the crybaby so I will go first Smiley smile

Traditionally the groom reads first because he's inititating the marriage.

But you can go with whatever you want.

I'm reading mine first...for no other reason than the old adage "Ladies, first" Smiley smile

I think the tradition of the man saying vows first goes back to the day when if the bride said hers and then the groom backed out of the marriage, the "poor, delicate flower" would just die of embarrassment.

Nay, do what suits you best!

My FH is reading his first. I can't wait to hear his voice when he says "I do."

DH went first but that's just how the officiant had it go. We let him write the vows and did the 'repeat after me' way and it was great.

I don't think it matters honestly. When my couples ask me, I tell them to do rock;paper;scissors.

I think it's good for the cryer/more nervous person to go first....

Spoke to Hubby last night and told him that there was a comment that the crybaby should go first and he pointed at me. lol

I read first for one reason only: I knew I would cry when FH started reading his and I didn't want to be so emotional that I couldn't read mine lol

Since our wedding ceremony will be less than 10 minutes, literally.... we are saying them together.
