Who kept there last name and is now regretting it?

I kept my last name, but I somewhat regret it now! At the time I did it due to my husbands active child support case and the child's Mother being shady. I didn't want her trying to come after me although his child support payments are current we thought at the time we were making the right decision....

However, I am now thinking about renewing my vows by having a "subsequent" marriage to change my last name!

You can change your name to anything at any time, you just have to file paperwork and probably go to court.

Patricia where are you getting your information from?

You can not remarry someone you are married to. To remarry - either your spouse or someone else, you first would have to divorce them.

In New York State, you can change your name for any of the below reasons:

    1) personal choice (you don't like your name or like another name better)

    2) to match with your spouse - you can go by his last name, your last name, hyphenate your names, create a new name etc

    3) or divorce- you can go back to your maiden name

I found this out after doing a 3 second google search.

Right what? I'm saying you have your information wrong.

Start with the social security office. You will have to send a copy of your marriage cert. with the name change form. Once you do that, you can easily change all of your other documents.

No need for a vow renewal.

You just got married in May. You should still be able to change your name. In IL one of my friends got married in August and changed her name after the new year, because she was going to someone else's destination wedding over Christmas and didn't want to risk her passport not being back in time. This is pretty common.

She's saying that in NY, if you want to take your husband's name when you get married, you have to put your new surname on your marriage license when you apply for it (i.e. before the wedding), and she did not. If she had, she probably could just take her marriage license to the SSA, DMV, etc. At this point, to take her husband's name, she either has to petition the court or file for a new marriage license and "remarry" her husband. The faster and cheaper option is the latter.

This is fascinating. In California we had to swear we weren't married to anyone else or each other before we could get our marriage license
