Who Gets The Front Passenger Seat: Parent or Spouse?

The Bride, on August 18, 2019 at 12:40 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 32
In 2018 a video went viral of a man arguing with his wife about why his mom got to sit in the front passenger seat.

Check out the inspiration for this discussion here: https://youtu.be/_-idE7ns6P0

Do you think the guy made the right decision? Why or why not? Who gets the front passenger seat: parent or spouse?

I think typically spouse. But health problems would trump that of corse. I think a lot of those you tube videos are put on just for attention and drama. Who would tape that argument then put it on You tube.

I think it’s a sign of respect to let someone older than you sit in the front seat even if that means you won’t be sitting with your spouse. So, I would expect my parent to go up front and my spouse to ride in back.

I think it's a matter of who is most comfortable where.

FH grew up in Manhattan and has never learned to drive. He almost never goes for the front passenger seat, because he's unused to it. On the other hand, I tend to get motion sick if I'm not driving.

If my FH is driving and his mom were going with us I’d automatically sit in the back and offer her the front seat because I feel it is the respectful thing to do and because I’d want to give her the chance to chat with her son.

Spouse unless there are legitimate issues requiring alternative seating arrangements.

I didn’t watch the video but I would always offer the front seat to my parents or in-laws, or even to someone with longer legs than me. It’s just out of respect, plus my FMIL has back issues so she absolutely sits wherever is most comfortable for her.

We have 2 toddlers, so 2 car seats in the back seat of the car. The only empty seat in back is in the middle so whoever sits in back has to climb over one car seat. Seen as how I’m both younger and thinner than both my mom and MIL, I always automatically take the back seat. That said, back when we only had one car seat, the parents got the back seat.

I can't see the video, but for us personally, if one of our parents are ever with us, we always have them sit in front as a sign of respect.

    Why typically the spouse?

I agree that people are doing some strange things to go viral.

That's your partner, your equal. While I respect my elders, unless they have a legitimate necessity, I shouldn't have to move in my own car that I help pay for. 😂
