Who else is using the traditional Wedding March song?

OG FMP, on March 4, 2015 at 12:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

I'm a little old fashioned and the sound of the Wedding March by Felix Mendelssohn is so beautiful and bridal. Thinking of using this song BUT when I hear it reminds me of a church and we're not getting married at a church. What song are you playing for your recessional?? and would yo play this song for a non-church wedding??

I'm walking down the aisle to 'Your Song' by Ellie Goulding.

You can absolutely still use that song if your wedding isn't in a church!

I am doing canon in D as well, because it was my parents wedding music, and I don't care if its overdone or whatever, its special to me because my mom came down the stairs to the same music. We are having it played on an acoustic guitar so its sounds a bit different than the traditional strings

I am doing Canon in D. I also considered Rebecca's March... its similar to the bridal march but prettier (I think anyway). Another good one is Trumpet Voluntary.

I chose Canon in D because when our Music Director started playing it, I got all teary eyed. I pictured myself walking in.

I love Mendelssohn's Wedding March! I'm debating whether to use it for the recessional as well. I love it, but I feel like it might have a bit too much "fanfare" since our wedding is fairly small. But whatever I choose, it will be classical--that's what I like for music, and I'm not really a fan of pop music in ceremonies.

To clarify, "Wedding March" by Mendelssohn is the one usually used as exit music (recessional). The traditional "Here Comes the Bride" often used for the processional is the Bridal Chorus by Wagner. A lot of people get these two mixed up!

I'm playing Wagner's Bridal Chorus. Getting married in a church, playing on the organ.

Read this. Thought it was interesting. "There are 2 wedding marches that are used all over the world: this and Felix Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" (like Wagner, Mendelssohn was from Germany, but he was Jewish). These two pieces became a tradition for weddings that started with Victoria, Queen of England... she chose Wagner's one for the entrance of the bride and the Mendelssohn one for the exit of the couple. In modern times it is normally used the other way around."

I've thought about using the traditional or maybe Come Thou Fount (of Every Blessing). I absolutely love the song...

I kinda thought the same thing, but I'm over the whole notion of "trying to be different." If a song stuck out as appropriate, I would pick it. Nothing did, so we're going the traditional route. Our ceremony is not in a church. It's at an indoor garden. I'm doing the traditional processional and recessional. In fact, 100% of my pre-ceremony music is classical music, then all of my post-recessional music is a mix of classic love songs and current love songs.

ETA: We are using a string trio for the ceremony music
