Who Does What Around Your Home?

Did you and your partner discuss who, if no both, would take care of/manage the upkeep of the home? Scheduling Doc’s appointments, doing grocery shopping and laundry, cleaning, cooking/meal prepping, etc. Did you decide on splitting the house work 50/50 or based upon your work schedules/interests...

Did you decide on splitting the house work 50/50 or based upon your work schedules/interests (i.e you prefer to wash the dishes instead of drying them so you stuck with it) or Did everything fall into place once you moved in together (before or after marriage)?

Full disclosure: We are in our mid fifties and are empty nesters. We have lived together since summer 2015. I have a more stressful job and was coming home and vacuuming, dusting, all the stuff. He did nothing, lol. Short story? We hired a cleaning person once a month and it is the best $90 we have ever spent, lol. I still clean a bit between her visits though. But I was NOT going to fight over cleaning, lol!!

We didn't have a long sit-down discussion and appointed chores. Sometimes these type of things just happen without thought. We both have office jobs, but he works a more stressful job and longer hours. Since COVID, he has been working from home but before he had to commute about 1-2 hours for work (depending on traffic) each day. So I do the majority of the cleaning. We live in a studio and his small desk and work space is set up in a corner in the kitchen area. That's the area he's mostly responsible for since that's where he is spending the majority of his time. I clean our room, bathroom, and areas of the kitchen I can if its not in his working spot. And I buy all the groceries and toiletries. But he does all the yard work/picking up dog poop, vehicle maintenance, pays the utilities and phone bill, and takes out the trash. We each do our own laundry, (except sheets and blankets I wash all those), we take turn with cooking and dishes and he feeds our dogs in the morning while I feed them at night. We do our own doctors/dentist/etc appointments. But if we are planning a vacation I am the planner and pay for booking and activities while he pays for all the food, gas, souvenirs, and does all the driving.
