Who buys the bridesmaids dresses?? Is it too much to ask the bridesmaids to pay for the dress themselves??

Definitely ask each what their budget is and go with the average. I was a bridesmaid last year and we all had to buy our own dresses. The bride did buy all of us earrings, gloves, and a oversized scarf (her wedding was in January), which I thought was neat.

My girls bought all their own dresses. I told them I wanted purple, and they all picked their own dress, so they picked their own budget too.
