White gold vs. yellow gold

jillandbill2014, on April 29, 2014 at 11:58 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

My engagement ring, which I love and am honored to wear, is my FH's grandmother's ring and it's yellow gold. While it is a beautiful ring and I lOVE IT! I'm not crazy about yellow gold, I prefer white. We have been thinking about what our wedding bands should be and I don't know what to do, since I would prefer white gold I want a white gold band, so I am posing a few questions for the ladies of WW, what should I do?

Option A: dipping or platting the engagement ring so it would match a white gold band. I would like to hear from anyone that has had a ring plated (I know there is some up keep involved) Are you happy with your ring now?

Option B: Buy what I like, does it matter if the engagement ring and band doesn't match?

Option C: FH has even suggested that we could pick out a white gold setting I like and use the diamonds from his grandma's ring. (I really don't like this option, I don't want to completely change his grandmother's ring)

What to do? What would you do?

Sorry not the best pic to show of the yellow gold band, but it's there!

If you dip your ring it will show through. When you make white gold you put white alloys in it to make it less yellow and then you dip it to make it completely white. When the plating starts to come off it turns a faint yellow color.

If you are dipping a yellow gold ring, as the plating comes off it will be a way stronger yellow. Which will probably require being dipped every 6 months and is a lot of upkeep (a normal white gold band should be dipped every year)

(I work for a jewelry store)

I was in the same position. My engagement ring is a yellow gold ring that belonged to FH's grandmother. I love it but don't usually wear yellow gold.

We had it plated in Rhodium about a month ago. Our jeweler said that it will wear - especially on the underside. Plating was only $30-40 though and I really like the look better than the yellow gold so it's worth the money/hassle to me to get it re-plated (he said probably once a year). The design of my e-ring has stones all along the top though, so you don't really see much of the band anyways.

I've attached a photo of my rhodium plated e-ring and white gold wedding ring to be (the e-ring that was plated is the band at the bottom)

Maybe have a wedding band custom made to fit your ring (since it is a strange shape anyways) and have it made in white gold with yellow gold elements to it. That way they will match your ring, but have the white gold that you love.

I like CeCe's idea. I know my stepmom has a platinum engagement ring and gold wedding ring. She alternates wearing them. Not the option I would want, but it's another possibility.

I would mix the two metals like CeCe said... you can easily create something that matches your Ering and it can have both yellow and white gold elements... my Eing is both white gold and rose gold. I love that I can match all of my other jewelry to it because its a mix of metals.

I was going to suggest the same thing as CeCe. Get a two-tone wedding band. It would "transition" your engagement ring to match other white gold jewelry that you wear.

I would leave it personally. It's beautiful and I agree I like white gold better than yellow (mine is yellow too but it is allowing me to wear my grandmothers wedding band with it). Sometimes heritage and history have to take precedence over the color. I do like CeCe's idea though.
