White Gold Rings... When to Get Re-Dipped?

Pancakes, on September 16, 2015 at 1:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 36

Those with white gold rings, when before the wedding are you getting your engagement ring re-dipped/rhodium-plated/whatever it's called? I've been wearing my engagement ring enough to have it noticeably different than my wedding band (made as a set). I have 2.5 weeks until the wedding and Jareds said that it can take anywhere from a couple hours to a couple days, depending on how busy they are. I have the worst luck of all bad luck out there, so I'm thinking of having it done this week. But is that too soon?

When are you getting yours done to make sure it's shiny and new and matches your wedding band? I know they are both white gold and should look the same once cleaned, but putting them side by side right now, they look slightly different because of wear. They fudged up big time and had to re-make both and were done at different times. So that might also be a factor. Not sure if I should drop off the wedding band with them, too.

I hear yearly you can get them re-dipped. I will have my e ring polished, buffed, and re dipped before the wedding so I would say go for it! If you want, bring the bands in and show the associate the difference and ask questions!

I don't understand having white gold redipped. My set is an heirloom and has never been dipped. My engagement ring and my new wedding band match. There's nothing off about the color. I'm confused...

My jewelry told us like 5-7 YEARS is normal to get theme re-plated. I was shocked. I thought it was like a once a year thing. I feel like I can see wear a little bit but honestly NOBODY else is going to notice and it won't show in photos so I didn't care.

Alexis, it also depends on the wear of them. For example, my hands are much more demanding in my job and there's definitely noticeable discoloration at the bottom of my e ring due to that. I've only had it since May. Would it turn yellow? No. I have a 75yr old ring on my right hand that's both white gold and gold. It's just not a shiny silver as it is new.

A hair stylist at my salon told me that she gets hers redipped every 5 months. I've been wearing mine for 13 months and I think it still looks perfect. I don't understand either.

Jareds told me every year they should be re-dipped, but don't HAVE to be. FH's sister in law never got hers re-dipped and it's been like 5 years. You can't tell if it's just the engagement ring, but this picture is the day I picked up my wedding band after it was re-made and I can tell the coloring is off. So it will definitely show in pictures. I've had my engagement ring for a while (engaged 10/31/13 but e-ring was re-made June 2014), so there are a lot of scratches on the band. It would help clean that up, too. Again, nothing people will notice. But it will be noticeable in the pictures. Since we paid for the plan that includes re-dipping as often as we like, I plan to get it done. I just didn't know how close to the wedding I should wait!

You have to get white gold redipped? What? The things I learn on WW! No one told me that.

My e-ring was re-dipped for the first time last month. I only noticed the difference in color when I put my band up next to it. Was it a huge difference? No. But I might as well re-dip them while they were being sent off. I plan on sending my ring off once a year for a thorough inspections and deep clean and will have it re-dipped then.

ETA: I also have a portable dark room set up in our apartment and have a tendency to lose my tongs so I oftentimes just put my fingers in the emulsions and it wears my rings a bit faster in my opinion.

Stephie - It's not a necessity, but keeps it looking fresh and new. You won't notice the wear from your everyday life until you have another piece that is new or freshly dipped next to it. But since my ring is going to be in a lot of close ups on that day and it's included in the care plan, why not?! All gold is yellow. But they add something to it to turn it into white gold. That wears off ever so slightly throughout the years and depends heavily on how much you use your hands, as Ally mentioned. If you got the warranty from the big name box stores, it's included with your re-sizing, inspections, cleanings, etc. Not sure on small town jewelers, though. The small town jewelers we checked out didn't even sell warranties and we would have to pay per sizing and cleaning. And we've already used the warranty through Jared just in our engagement!

I think I'll drop it off this week, then. Like I said, I have a lot of bad luck and people forget about me. I dropped my shoes off to be dyed on the 5th and they said it takes 24-48 hours at most. They weren't ready until yesterday :/

Your ring looks fine, I wouldn't even bother. Jared's is a chain wanting more money from you. I'm no expert, but seriously they look beautiful and think once a year is very unnecessary.

Jared isn't making money off it. She said it's on her care plan that's already paid for.

I didn't realize how much my E ring was faded until I started wearing my band... it almost looks yellow- but only on the back. You'd never notice from the front. Definitely wanting it redipped.

I had 2 of my of my rings re dipped in rhodium, and you can tell a major difference depending on how much wear is on the ring. They looked brand new.

I actually used to work for JB Robinson Jewelers (same chain as Kays), and I really think the situation varies A LOT. I knew a lady who came into the store with heirloom jewelry, and it looked really nice. It had barely yellowed at all. Some of it depends on body chemistry as much as physical wear and tear. Some people, myself included, have skin oils that can wear down jewelry faster (I haven't seen it as much with gold, but anything silver never lasts on my hands).

I would suggest playing it by ear, unless it's bothering you on a yearly basis to see minor wear on your ring (which you may find there isn't any). If your rings are starting to lose that white color like Jenn B's rings, it might be time for a re-dipping. As far as the picture of your rings go, I honestly don't think I see what you see. But, since you aren't paying extra, I see no reason not to if it would make you feel better!! Do it ASAP though, in case they have any kind of hold up. At the store I worked at, we rarely got things back as soon as we hoped (you can imagine the angry customers. I got used to telling people our actual wait times when my supervisor wasn't listening).

Yep, Jenn. It's always in the back that wears down because that gets brushed against things the most! But you can't tell until you put another ring next to it. It's like looking at white dresses and ivory dresses. You can't tell (at least, I can't) most of the time which one a dress is until you put it next to one another! It was recommended to have my engagement ring re-dipped before the ceremony so that they can wear down evenly.

And yeah, it's not costing any extra money to do this. As I said, it's included with the basic plan FH purchased when buying the ring. Just saying it in terms of he paid for the warranty so might as well use it Smiley smile Maybe I'll drop it off today, then. I do have a replica cheap ebay ring to wear if it takes a while.

I was told once a year for "re-dipping". Every 3-6 months for polishing.

I also got my ring at Jared and have the plan where you re-dip whenever you want. I usually do it on the 6 month check up and at my Jared's it takes about 4-6 days. My 6 month check up was in May so about 2 1/2 weeks before the wedding (just in case it took extra time) I went. I picked it up a week later and then didn't wear it until the wedding to keep it fresh. I also go re-dip it if I'm going somewhere fancy like a wedding or something just because I can and so it looks nice.
