White Gold and Rodium Plating

Kelly, on October 30, 2015 at 2:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

I went to look at wedding bands this afternoon. I've had trouble finding a band that goes well with my ring so I tried a local jewelry store and asked about custom designing a ring to go with my e-ring. The designer was not at the store so they took some pictures and said that they'd get back to me soon. Before I left, they offered to clean my ring for me (which was really good because it was getting a little dirty). Anyways, when she gave it back to me she said that it looked as though my ring could use another Rodium treatment. I was shocked by this suggestion because my ring is platinum, not white gold, which doesn't need Rodium. I'm sure it was just a mistake by the young girl that worked there, but it makes me feel like they are trying to make money on services even if they're not necessary.

I guess what I'm saying is: Look out for yourselves ladies. You know when (or if) your ring needs to be re-plated. Don't be duped into services you don't need.

You can tell when white gold needs a redo because it will start changing color. I own a platinum ring that I've had for years (18th bday present) and it has never changed or anything. I know platinum can warp if hot enough but it doesn't need replating

Yeah, FH bought my ring in platinum so that we wouldn't need to get it re-plated. It just struck me as odd that she'd recommend re-plating. She didn't see the "PLAT" engraved into my ring so she said she assumed that it was white gold. And I guess she recommends re-plating regardless of the condition of a white gold ring. It just struck me as odd.

That is odd. White gold, rhodium plated white gold, and platinum all look totally different. And there's no reason to plate platinum - it's a naturally white metal. Either it was scam, or she was completely clueless.

Sometimes platinum can get a duller appearance to it (more grey than shiny platinum), and you can get it polished to bring out the natural state of the metal (one store I worked at had a buffing machine in the back, but sometimes a jewellery cloth was all it took!). Maybe she just meant that it was starting to lose the shine? I don't know though, I worked in jewellery for ages, sometimes people are clueless haha.

My rings are white gold, were replated in April and need it again soon. I am a nurse and wash my hands in alcohol gels about 15 -20 times a day or more. It eats away the rhodium. i wish my rings were low maintenance but they are not.
