Whistler Honeymoon

Blair Waldorf, on January 18, 2017 at 9:34 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

So FH and I are looking into honeymoon plans, we are thinking about going to Whistler, BC probably in December. For those of you that have been what are your tips as far as where to stay, what to eat, best place to buy lift passes, other fun stuff? We are pretty open but definitely want a few days on the mountain. Thanks in advance!

Make sure that you book pretty far in advance. December is peak season in Whistler and it's Canada's 150th so there's lots of events at tourist spots.

@Jessie thanks! We want to get it booked we are just trying to pick where to stay and whether ski in/ski out is worth the price difference of having a short walk to the mountain

So I have done a variety of things at Whistler before. Ski In/Ski Out, stayed in the village. One time we stayed in Squamish and just drove up for the day. I wouldn't recommend staying in Squamish but personally I wouldn't feel like it was worth the cost to be ski in/ski out. One of the best parts of Whistler/Blackcomb is that it is a whole little village up there- it's fun to walk around check out the restaurants and bars. They have a little grocery store but it is super expensive. Make sure you get some drinks and snacks at a grocery store in Van or Squamish before you drive up.

Usually it is cheaper to buy tickets online before you get there. If you're not regular skiiers/snowboarders just remember that its actually a pretty decent workout. So if you're going for 5 days maybe give yourself a break day in between and only get lift tickets for 4. Definitely do the Peak to Peak. It's amazing.

Also keep in mind that BC in general is expensive, like 3x normal city prices expensive and they are going to jack their prices this year because of the tourist value of it being the 150th.

What Jessie says is true. And Whistler/Blackcomb is Intrawest's baby- prices for everything are nuts. This is definitely a big budget trip. Whenever we went we would find 2 for 1 lift passes. However that was usually through our University- not sure where else to find them but may be worth it to do some digging.

Is there something particular about Whistler that you want to visit or do you just want to do a ski trip?

Have you looked into Mont Tremblant? It's probably cheaper than Whistler even though it's a tourist area too. Quebec tends to be cheaper than most of Canada and the outskirts of Mont Tremblant have really nice B&Bs and Inns.

Hey there, you're talking about my backyard, lol. $200 bucks a night is reasonable for Dec at Whistler. Which resort is the airbnb in? Some places advertise ski in/out but it can be a bit of a walk. There are great restaurants and pubs there and there are a number of grocery/liquor stores. Most places have kitchens, except the big hotels.

I'm happy to help answer questions, as have a place there.

Even though the price tag says it's more, the exchange rate is AMAZING for Americans (but super crappy if you are Canadian). Think of it as a 30% off everything sale Smiley smile

If I were you, I would spend a day or two in Vancouver as well! There is so much to do and it's just a really beautiful city. Lots of breweries, cool restaurants, and hiking if you make your way to North Van.

@Hearts - Yes, the exchange is good, but you still have to pay sales tax on top of everything. Their HST is 12%.

@Jacks - Does BC have a tourist tax in Whistler?

Aspens is up near the Chateau, so it's a little way outside if the main village. It's not fat to walk to the gondola though. That's a good price for Aspens. whistler is very romantic in December, tons of Christmas lights. They also have snowmobile tours and snowshoe parks etc if you want to stay off the mountain for a few days. It's definitely the place if you're active and adventurous. Ask me closer to the time and let you know about pubs/restaurants and etc. On Sunday nights there's a free "Fire and Ice" ski trick show put on by the mountain. It's best seen at a window table at Blacks pub.

Sorry JessieJV didn't see your question. No tourist tax, just sales tax.

@JessieJV: I'm aware - I live in Vancouver! Even with tax, the exchange rate makes everything more affordable.
