WHISKEY DRINKERS!

Candy, on December 7, 2017 at 7:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

So I wanted to get a nice bottle of whiskey for my uncle who is walking me down the isle.

I know nothing about hard liquor.

Is this a good bottle?

If not, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Will you see him for Christmas? Maybe ask him then...

It would probably be helpful to at least find out what type of whiskey he likes best (Scotch, rye, bourbon, Irish, Canadian). Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Irish whiskey but love scotch or rye whiskey.

    Ask someone close to him.

There is a difference between single malt and blended whiskey. There also are big differences between the types of whiskey. I am a huge whiskey drinker, but there are plenty of “good” bottles that I just don’t like. Bottom line - ask someone close to him what type and brands he likes.

If he is a single malt Irish whiskey fan that is a really good bottle. But there is a lot of variety in the world or whiskey. See if you can figure out what he usually drinks and then find a really good bottle in that style he likes.

Yeah there are WAAAAAAAAY too many whiskey options, some people prefer the cheap brands to high end, so even if it *seems* nice or expensive, they may not like it. Too many versions, american, irish, scotch....variations up the wazoo!

If you want to gift him something he's never tried before I'd recommend this very good Japanese Whiskey called "Hibiki"

most hard liquor drinkers like to try new spirits...but there are those who just stick to their go to.

Yeah, whiskey is such a varied thing- Bushmill's is an excellent Irish whiskey, but I prefer ryes; it's kinda like trying to buy clothes for someone else. Ask someone close to him about his preferences. Let us know what you find out and we can give better recommendations! My dad works for Jim Beam and loves giving whiskey recommendations.

Also- I loooove Hibiki. So different, but so tasty.

My BFF is a big wine drinker and I don't know anything about wine so I covertly asked her by asking what she would recommend to someone else. Maybe if you ask him "I have a friend who really enjoys whiskey and I wanted to buy them something nice for their birthday and I know you would have a good suggestion what do you recommend?" You'll likely get a good idea of plenty brands or what specific type he likes.

Bender's is a brand my husband and Dad both really liked. They only saved it for special occasions so it must have been good lol. But I think @TugBride's suggestion is great. You could say "I'm thinking about getting FH a bottle of whiskey as a gift/FH is thinking about getting his best man a bottle of whiskey as a gift/etc" and get his recommendations. You could even say "if you could buy any bottle of whiskey, what would you try?" after he's given you a couple suggestions. It's a covert way to get a list of his favorites and an idea of what he wants to try!

Angels Envy is a Aged in Port Wine barrels. It is very fragrant with an incredibly smooth finish!

My DH loves bulleit rye. I would ask though - there are so many options and preferences vary between people so much.

If it's a Single Malt Scotch you're looking for my Mom (a Scotch aficionado) recommends this that won't break the bank: https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/dalwhinnie-15-year-old-whisky/ My FMIL has been buying her a bottle every year for Christmas. :-D
