Which Alcohol Brands

Pancakes, on September 21, 2015 at 9:06 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

We went to liquor stores this weekend to get pricing on various brands. Please pick one from each category of which you prefer! Some we already know because of our friend group, but others we aren't sure. Prices are for the largest bottle size.

Beer: Bud Light ($21) or Yuengling/Yuengling Light ($18)? (we will be having a fancier/craft beer in addition to one of these.)

Champagne: All I know is Martini de Asti ($22). Any other recommendations?

Vodka: Smirnoff ($20 after rebates) or Three Olives ($18 after rebates)

Gin: Seagrams ($18), Beefeater ($38), Tanqueray ($45).

Rum: Bacardi ($26), Captain Morgan ($33). Not sure on dark or light.

Whiskey: Jameson. It's the most expensive of our options, but Jameson & Ginger Ale is a big drink among our friends (including a favorite of FH).

Wine: We have a Souvignon Blanc and a mild Merlot. Should we get a more traditional red? We do have a lot of wine drinkers in the family. Not sure if 3 choices are necessary. Thanks!!

Im skipping over gin and wine since I don't drink either. Beer: Yuengling, Vodka: Smirnoff, Rum: Captain Morgan, but if you are able to afford both, I would get Bacardi and Captain.

I got Segrams gin for my wedding. It seem to go over well. The same thing with Bacardi. I got both light and dark. Some mixed drinks like Bahama Mamas need both. I would go with Bud Light because I have no idea what the other one is lol.

If you're going to have craft beer, I'd do a light beer as the alternative. Smirnoff vodka is fine. I would do a light Bacardi rum. Any white wine options? Not sure on the others.

Here are my suggestions and the prices we paid.

Beer - I prefer Bud Light, but I am surprised Yeungling Light is cheaper so I would maybe go with that! We had Bud Light, Summer Shandy (like 5 got drank) Octoberfest and Laguinats Lil Sumpthin Extra (IPA)

Champagne - We had Cooks, It's cheap and pretty good! I think we paid $10/bottle but I can't remember on this one and it's not on my spreadsheet.

Vodka - we had Kettle One ($35/handle). I would go with Smirnoff over Three Olives.

Gin - We had Beefeaters ($26/handle). I know many people prefer that over Seagrams. I wouldn't go up to Tanqueray.

Rum - We had both. Bacardi Silver ($18/handle) and Captain ($22/handle)

Whiskey - There are so many different types (and DH and a lot of his friends are whiskey/Scotch/Bourbon drinkers) so we had a few. Jameson ($40/handle), Makers Mark ($48/handle), Jack Daniels ($40/handle) and Johnnie Walker ($29/handle)

    Are you skipping tequila?

Wine we did two of each...Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir and Cab Sav. The Chardonnay and Cab Sav were the most popular.

FYI - we ordered online from theliquorbarn.com and it was WAY CHEAPER than anythign else we could find and it shipped like the next day (you do have to have someone at home to sign since it's alcohol) but I HIGHLY recommend them. I know you live in Cleveland too, and the minimums in Ohio are SO much higher than other places. I can tell you where we got our beer from too, they were awesome. I have all the prices and amounts we paid if you have questions you can inbox me!!

Yuengling is VERY popular in our area. It used to not be available in our state, and people would literally drive hours to go pick up a case. It just became available to us last year, I think. FH was thinking a pumpkin beer for the craft beer, since he knows it will go over well with our crowd, and that our families will either drink Yuengling or wine.

Would you still do Smirnoff without the rebate? Smirnoff without the rebate would be $26 and Three Olives would be $18. The first store didn't have the Smirnoff rebate, and the other store that did, only had about 4 on various bottles. So not sure we could even get the rebate.

We want to stick to one in each type because too many options equals lots of opened bottles left over. Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine and Merlot is a red wine. So we have one of each right now.

Thanks, Raelyn!!! We are under 2 weeks out. Do you think the liquor barn will still get to us on time? Those prices are a lot cheaper than in stores! And did they schedule a time with you for delivery? Or do you have to stay home all day and wait? And I think the Yuengling price was a sale price. I think it said $2 off, which makes it pretty even with Bug Light. We'll probably be getting 10-15 cases of beer total.

I went to a wedding on Saturday and Leinenkugels Pumpkin & Sam Adams Oktoberfest were a very popular choice so I think that is a good idea. If your family loves Yuengling, then that's what I would go with. I didn't even know they had a light option. That's crazy that it wasn't sold in Ohio...what's up with that???

Umm - 2 weeks would probably be fine (ours all arrived within a week I believe) but I would call TODAY and verify with them. Yea, their prices are incredibly cheap compared to Ohio's state minimums. It all shipped UPS so it just depends on your UPS schedule. Ours always comes at either 1pm or 530 pm so we knew it would be one of those (we order a lot of shit online lol). DH works from home so for us it wasn't a problem.

For our beer, we ordered it from Mack's Beverage on Ridge Road in Parma. The owner (can't remember his name - DH would know) was awesome and his prices were reasonable. We just went in and he gave us prices/recommendations for what would give us the most bang for your buck. You could get wine/champagne from there too (but we got it from liquor barn as well) and I think he does 10% off each case.

ETA - and I (also being from Cleveland) totally understand the obsession with Yuengling lol Smiley winking

ETA2 - JCC, IDK if this is true, but I HEARD the reason it wasn't sold in Ohio for so long was because it was founded/created in Pittsburgh and the owner HATES the browns so he refused to sell in Ohio for a long time. Again, not sure how true that is haha

Beer: Bud light, but only because I don't know what the other one is lol. Gin: I prefer Tanqueray, but tbh when I go out and get gin and tonics I just get house gin which is normally Seagrams, and it's perfectly fine. Save yourself the $! Vodka: I actually like Kirkland (Costco) or New Amsterdam. Rum: ew. Whiskey: YESSS! Champs: Trader Joe's has one called Blanc de Blanc that my friends and I actually love and it's super cheap. Wines: good, generic choices. Ps on a totally random note, my FH came home yesterday and told me he wanted a meteorite ring, he saw it on Instagram and just loved the idea since he's so into space. He shows me the pic, and it's totally your photo! I was freaking out at the "small world"-ness of the whole thing (is that a word? Lol).

Beer: I only drink craft beer, but I would opt for the Yuengling of those two.

    Vodka: Smirnoff

    Gin: Tanqueray

    Rum: Captain Morgan

Whiskey: I've never had Jameson but that's probably a good option. I'm a Tullemore Dew fan.

Wine: Those two sound like good options for wines. Both are on the drier side, would you needed a sweeter option thrown in like a Reisling? I don't know what types of wines your guests like.
