Where does dj usually set up?

Lynn, on December 6, 2020 at 10:28 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4

I've been looking at old pictures online taken from our venue to get some ideas about room placement. It seems that the normal set-up for this place is to have the head table set up against the far wall (if looking at a floor plan, picture the "top" back wall in a rectangular shape room where width is more narrow than height) and for the DJ to set-up on that same back wall but in one of the two top corners. Dance floor is generally in the middle of the room with head table "above" and guest tables "below." In other words, the dance floor is in between the head table and the guest tables.

My FH thinks the DJ should go in the very back of the room ("bottom"- back wall- opposite the head table) so the DJ isn't visible in photos.

I'm thinking that it doesn't make sense to put the DJ on the opposite wall as the head table since the DJ will be behind where the guests are looking (assuming the guests are facing the head table and dance floor).

Should the DJ be able to be easily seen during the reception/dance time?

I think it makes sense to have the dj near the head table instead of behind guests. This would most likely be more open to the dance floor and more easily accessible to guests making song requests. It would also make it slightly more quiet for guests who are not dancing, as the music would be coming from across the room instead of blaring from behind them. The venue may also have more outlets, etc. in that part of the room to better accommodate a dj set up. I wouldn’t be worried about it for pictures. The only time the wedding party is really at the head table is for dinner, which isn’t a popular time for photos, and the photos that are taken during that time are not the ones you’d be likely to frame and display!

I think it depends on what the room looks like. Our reception ballroom had a wall of floor to ceiling windows overlooking the golf course. The sweetheart table was against this wall. Then in front of us was the dance floor, then guest tables, and the DJ booth on the back wall in the center with 2 bars in the corners on that same wall. It worked really well.

I agree with Natalie- the DJ shouldn’t be behind the guests. If your photographer is good, they’ll make sure to not have your DJ in the pics.

Is there room for the DJ to set up somewhere else alongside the dance floor? I'd definitely want to keep the DJ right by the dance floor so they can see what's going on and so that the music is pumping in the right place! 🎵

Our DJ set up on the righthand side of the dance floor, and you can only see him in the background of a few dancefloor pictures!
