Where do i start?

Caitlin, on May 7, 2020 at 1:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

Hey y'all.. sorry for such a open ended question.

My mother is no longer with us and my step mom and I aren't the closest.

I'm basically planning this wedding by myself.

My fiance is SUPER supportive but is more about making me happy then actually helping me make decisions lol

I don't even know where to start with my wedding planning, especially with all of this Covid-19 stuff happening. We cant even really book a photographer for engagement/ save the date photos.

I guess what I'm asking: where did you ladies start and how can I start planning the things that ARE within my control?

Thanks in advance!

The easiest thing to start with is going to be looking on Pinterest to get a feel for what kind of wedding you want - look at different seasons to help you decide the time of year, look at different types of venues, look at different styles (rustic, elegant, etc). This will give you a clearer direction to help you feel more decisive before you start looking at vendors. Personally, I started looking at venues first because that determined our date (Friday’s in April were much cheaper than Saturday’s in May!). At some point pretty early on you’re going to want to think about your budget. We had no idea what things would cost so we couldn’t start with our budget like many people recommend. We set a budget after reaching out to some vendors and seeing what pricing looks like. Once you have a venue and a date you can start looking into other things like caterers, photographers, DJs, etc.

    Hey there,

I did like the previous poster. I am planning the whole wedding by myself since I am somewhat of a control freak. I saved all the pinterest posts under different sections before my fiance even proposed. Haha. First, figure out what date you want to get married on and then start looking at venue. We did not take engagement photos. WeddingWire Budget and Checklist are also very helpful.

Once you decide the type of wedding you want, and the look, start your guest list. Catering/bar are usually the most expensive part of a wedding budget, and that cost relates directly to the number of people you will invite. Also, the kind of venue you choose will depend on the number of guests.

So, start with a "raw" list of everyone you'd like to invite. Once you have a number, you can start researching venues. You can usually get a lot of information online, or over the phone, since you probably won't be able to take any venue tours for now. Venue should be your first big vendor to research/book, as they book up really fast, and now with tons of couples postponing their weddings because of Covid-19, you may find that venues are booking even faster, and farther out.

My fiancé and I got engaged March 26th of this year and it was right in the midst of the stay at home order. We just had a family friend take some engagement photos of us and did a little announcement/ save the date at the same time because our wedding is 1/23/21. I am basically planning my wedding on my own, if you have any questions let me know! 😊❤️
