where do I put the dj?

kathy, on September 5, 2009 at 5:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

I'm getting my table charts set up for my reception, and I'm trying to figure out the best place for the dj. The room is rectangle in shape, with the far wall having a large fireplace at the opposite end of the room from the entrance. I was planning to put the head table in front of the fireplace, but the hall also has a permanent "dance floor" set more toward that end of the room. I want my tables to "cluster" around the dance floor and put the dj at the other end of the room. (50x100ft) This end has the kitchen and bar areas. Is this too far away from the dance floor? Any suggestions?

One of the reason I chose my reception venue is that, the dj is on a balcony above the ballroom. So he or his equipment will not be on the same floor as us, nor will his equipment be seen and won't take a way from the elegance of the room

If your dj has excellent speakers and equipment, I don't think it will matter where you place him.

You may want to contact your DJ and ask him/her. She/he may already be familiar with the hall.

It is best to have him near the dance floor so that he can see what is going on and if people are enjoying things and music transitions for garter toss and such but I agree with RSQ you should see what your DJ thinks.

    Kathy,

Your DJ should be positioned by the dance floor to be able to interact with your guests. It's also good to position speakers so they are not directly pointed at specific tables. Acoustically, the worst setup is when the DJ needs to project over tables to reach the dance floor. Sound dissipates from the source, so you want to have the loudest sound on the dance floor and not so loud at the tables where people will be conversing.

Thanks for your advice so far! I'm gonna re-work the floor plan and try to move him with out taking away from the fireplace.

There are a few things you need to consider:

    - Make sure he/she is by an outlet, and if not, has adequate extension chords

    - position your DJ in a way so that he/she can see the dance floor, easily take requests from your guests, etc

    - make sure the DJ is in a spot so that he/she is not the background for all pictures!

Your venue will probably have ideas about where they want the DJ. Right next to the dance floor is where I _always_ want to be if at all possible. We like to have plugs on two circuits (one for lights and one for sound). Most places can accommodate that. We carry a 100 foot industrial extension cord, which has always gotten us to the power that we need.
