Where do I find ribbon for my corset for my wedding dress? Help

Rhonda, on June 26, 2012 at 9:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I thought 40 bucks was alot to pay for the ribbon that ties up the back of my dress. The tailor added a corset but the ribbons I bought were not the right ones so off to find where to get the right one.

What type of ribbon are you looking for? Satin ribbon, or actual corset strapping like which comes with a corset wedding gown?

You can shop seach for corset replacement ribbon online, I wouldn't think it would be more than $20 for it.

I would just go into your local fabric store and look at what ribbons they have. Typically corset dresses use a really fat ribbon, so I don't think I'd go less than an inch wide. Ribbon laces used with actual corset-corsets (steel bones and front busks and whatnot) are typically thinner, because they need to go through smaller holes and be cinched up tight, not through fabric loops that most dresses use.

You know, I re-read this and changed my mind... I would ask the dressmaker if she has any extra fabric and can sew the laces from that... I don't know what that would cost... I can't imagine it would be much, just a tube seam really, but that's what I would actually do.

I don't know where to buy it- but don't use just normal ribbon- it will fall apart. you need cording. I've used leather cording for ren. costume corsets, but it was bought at a ren faire.

Thanks ladies for the input, suggestions and personal experience. I am looking for the ribbon that goes in a wedding gown corset. I have a satin dress, I think that's the fabric, right, for wedding gowns? I would like either ribbon, just as long as he matches and is a great price and is sturdy.

You don't want regular ribbon, and even the stuff you'll get from a site like corset connection is iffy (a friend and ren faire cast mate bought one from them...). The reason the stuff from the bridal store is so pricey is because it's usually a flat tube made of the same material as the dress, not what we would normally call ribbon.

Aidan is right. When I make a corset back for a wedding gown I always make long bias tubing from fabric to use as the strapping. That is what is originally in wedding gown corsets. It needs to be a fabric tube approximately 3/4" wide by 8' long. Regular ribbon does not lay as nice because it is not thick enough. I know that David's Bridal charges $20/yard for their fabric tubing when they add a corset to a wedding gown.

Look on e-bay for corset ties. I am ordering one in red for my daughter for about 24.00 including shipping.

I have a taffeta wedding gown with a corset back. The lady who made it did an extraordinary job! My only problem is the tubing she made is not wide enough and the lacing comes loose after a while. Any ideas?
