Where are my Pageant Girls? Spray Glue for keeping strapless dress up?

Courtney, on March 30, 2013 at 12:08 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17

Hi Ladies,

We have all been to weddings where the bride is wearing a strapless dress and keeps hiking the dress up all night. I'm trying to avoid that! As the night goes on, it seems like the dress could stretch a little and start to loosen and slide down. I have a pretty modest chest, so there isn't much to hold it up.

The seamstress suggested double-sided tape on inside top edge of the dress so it would stick to the skin and not slide down. It doesn't seem like that would work at all, but what do you guys think?

What do you think of spraying craft glue before putting the dress on to make sure it stays in place? When I worked a pageant in the past, the contestants used to spray it before the swimsuit competition to keep their suits from riding up. what do you think - would it work on a dress? Any pageant ladies have experience with this?

Thanks Lynzey! I haven't ever used fashion tape. Does it stick to the skin? Sounds like that's what it's designed for?

I would not think that spray glue would do much. Consider the bathing suit is lightweight fabric and they are probably not in it for hours vs the dress being heavy material for hours.

I agree with MrsC... also... if your dress is altered correctly this won't happen - as much. I always get mine altered a little tighter around the "chest" area I'm also having a sewn in bra because a heavy wedding dress with a strapless bra - the bra doesn't have a chance to stay on & up without you pulling on it all night. Also, make sure you place the fashion tape about an inch below the top of the dress. Reason why I suggest this is because it is a heavier dress and it may not work for that much weight but if it does it will pull the skin and you will have these weird wrinkles if you have the tape too close to the edge. You can always have the seamstress sew in some silicone/rubber strips much like strapless bra has, which will help with the slippage. Lastly, if you don't want a sewn in bra get a full bra, much like a corset or a 1/2 corset. This will give your undergarment the support it needs to help hold up the ladies and a heavy dress - remember it's on double duty.

It always bugs the hell out of me when someone suggests a strapless to someone with such a heavy garment. But that's me....

If your dress fits right it won't be a problem. It's not your chest that should hold the dress up(I mean really, those things move and aren't the most solid part of your body). It should fit tight to your rib cage. That is what is supposed to hold your dress up. Most brides that have slippage issues, it's because they thought their boobs should hold it up and it didn't fit their torso properly. Mine was strapless, and I had no issues. It stayed put. I would be wary of craft glue, because swimsuit material and wedding gown material are not alike at all.

I agree, if the dress fits right, it shouldn't slip. My seamstress at DB was terrible. I just want it a little tighter in the chest, and then I think I will have more confidence. She sewed in bra cups which is great, but it seems like the cups are too big and I feel like I'm swimming around inside, which is contributing to feeling insecure. The seamstress was in a hurry both times I met with her and she was busy helping others and answering the phone, so I don't really feel like my concerns were heard.

Christine, thanks for your tip about how to use the fashion tape. I have never used it and wouldn't have thought to put it an inch down!

I had a bra once with the silicone strips on it. It did keep the straps up, which was nice. The silicone ended up being annoying on it's own. Of course, I think you have to try it to see if it works for you. I'm having a halter style top so I don't have to think about it.

@Courtney you paid for alterations. Call and talk to the manager tell them it wasn't done properly and your concerns weren't addressed. Have them re-do it or take it elsewhere.... if you are swimming in it they didn't do it right.

Edit: AND if she told you fashion tape as a fix then she didn't do it right. If they won't fix it for free ask them for a partial refund on your alterations because you have to go somewhere else to fix it. Then write a review on Yelp and write a letter to corporate if they don't help you.

Oh, how many times have I seen the "thumb hook" to hitch up the dress! And that's during the ceremony!

Ok. So I just came from my first fitting at DB. I think I have the biggest and heaviest dress they carry. I kept telling my seamstress that I thought the dress was sitting too low and would fall throughout the day. She said "no, no, it will be fine once the cups are altered." I kept "nicely" voicing my concerns until the manager overheard and came over. Turns out, she's going to take it in almost 2 inches at the waist! I could tell just by them pinning it that it will be perfect. I'm a firm believer that the waist holds the dress up and not the bust Smiley smile

I have very large natural DD and sometimes DDD/E breasts. Bosom Couture Boob Glue worked like a charm. And it is specifically designed for delicate breast skin and will not stain, washes off easliy with water and safe skin sensitive ingredients. I saw it on The Doctors Show last May and then again on Rachel Ray in Dec. I bought it online. ....love it! Kept the girls lifted up and firm and in place all day long. I wear it now w/ my bra too, its like adding a lift and support. My sister has tiny boobies and she uses it to hold her cleavage front and center.

You can just google Boob Glue and you will see it. Good luck! and congrats to all

My dress feels pretty secure after alterations - the boning sits on my hips and holds it up, the waist is snug. The issue I find is if I raise my arms, the dress stays where it was because of the weight of the dress, but is now holding on to skin slightly lower down, and when I lower them that shifts the dress down a little. I’ve had fashion tape itch if it’s actively pulling on the skin to hold something (as opposed to just keeping a light fabric in place). Any other thoughts on this?
