When's a Good Time to Close the Bar?

Simone, on June 9, 2019 at 5:39 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

Are you all ending closing the bar before the reception ends? Our wedding starts at 4, cocktail hour from about 5 to 6. Reception ends at 10. We're thinking about closing the bar around nine to give ppl a chance to sober up before they leave and sort of cutting it off once we meet our minimum for the evening. We're getting married on a rooftop, which opens to the public at 10pm but we'll have a VIP section for bottle service for anyone who wants to stay afterward. Does this sound reasonable?

It seems odd to me that the guests who want to stay for the after party will have to take an hour break from drinking just because. I probably wouldn't stick around for the after party to start drinking again after I've sobered up. I also think you should trust your adult guests not to drink and drive without cutting them off an hour before the end of the event. I would say many people will take that as a cue for the end of the party and start leaving.

Ive Been to weddings where the bar closed about a half hour early and wasn’t bothered by it. I’d just be sure that the DJ makes a last call announcement so no one is surprised.

I agree with PP! Half an hour early is reasonable!

30 minutes is good. It's pretty standard.

I personally chose not to close the bar but none of if my guest were driving back home. I do think what Caytlyn said makes a lot of sense. An hour break (or longer) is more than enough for the party to die if people are not really drinking.

Our bar is closing 30 minutes before the wedding ends, so 10:30 PM. Our venue requires that. We are also providing transportation for guests.
