When?

Chantelle, on November 9, 2020 at 8:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 16
1. When do groom and groomsmen try on suits/order suits? The OCD planner in me wants them to do this six months prior? But it seems the groomsmen attire thing is more lax than ordering a bridesmaid dresses. When did your groom and groomsmen try on/order suits?

2. When do couples do the food tastings if the venue or providing the catering?
Thank you! ❤️

I cannot remember the exact month out from the wedding day, but the wedding wire checklist mentioned it, if I'm not mistaken

We went to Men's Wearhouse 6 months out but I'm sure 3 months would have been okay. They usually do the first meeting to get everything decided and an initial fitting and then another fitting a month before.

Our venue (who did our catering) helped us schedule a food tasting at our convenience since we had a destination wedding. We did our tasting in December for our April wedding (we rescheduled later). They will give you a timeline for that

Our wedding is on 4/3/21 & my fiancé still hasn’t decided on groomsmen! At first it was a huge point of contention between us. Once I took a step back, apologized for trying to force the issue, things got so much better between us! We agreed on a due date of January for him to decide on groomsmen. He has decided on wearing a suit. He’s going to start looking at suits next month. It’s so much easier for guys. A lot more work & details for the ladies!

My husband decided on the groomsmen outfits about 6 months prior (we wanted to get it done and out the way in case of another shut down) however his groomsmen haven't been fitted or anything yet.

As far as the food tasting we are doing ours in January for our late March wedding.

We went through Men's Warehouse, and we chose everything about 4 months out. The guys were all able to go back a month before the date and get remeasured if they felt like they changed measurements between that time. We did our food tasting about 4-5 months out as well.

What do the timelines published everywhere suggest for suit fittings? 6 months or thereabouts?

As far as tastings for catering, that should be done before the vendor is booked to make sure you are not locked into something that will backfire that you cant get out of. It doesn't matter if it's provided by the venue or a catering company or a baker. Never sign any contracts or make payments before getting a tasting.

We did our food tastings a full year in advance (but this timing was in order to choose a caterer; the venue itself did not provide the catering). My husband chose his tux and the groomsmens tuxes at Men's Warehouse a couple of months before the wedding

There's a handy timeline in "Planning Tools" above, as well as one on the Knot.

It's really up to the groom, but a few months out is perfectly fine. Most tux rental places are old hands at this.

    And, honestly?

This is something your FH should figure out on his own. It's his attire! Don't take everything on, all by yourself, you'll burn out.

My husband & I went to Mens Ware house 6 mos before the wedding & decided on the tux cut & color. He then sent it to the guys and they got fitted before the wedding. Mens warehouse doesn't recommend getting fitted too soon, as weight can fluctuate. Around 2 weeks before the wedding I got an email that everyone was fitted.

We did our tasting like 9 mos. before the wedding.

My FH and his groomsmen have been going the last few weeks and we are just under a month out from wedding day. It is way more laid back than BM dresses for sure!! We did our tasting a year out but that was only because we had our planning meeting on our (original) wedding date so we could see what our location will look like that time of year. I think typical is 6-8 months though!

We ordered the suits from GenerationTux about 6-7 months in advance but I would not recommend. They are very confusing to use and there is not much communication between them and you. Plus their sizing doesn't make very much sense. We used them because of COVID and not wanting to go in store.

Our guys ordered their suits around the 3 month mark. They purchased their suits, so we did it a little earlier to make sure they had time to get alterations if needed.

As far as food tasting, ours was done between 6-7 months out. That might be a little early, but our venue was not local, so we went up and met with them whenever it was convenient. Plus, I am a super planner, so to me, the earlier the better!

My FH actually wants to go shopping for his suit alone with me first so he can pick something out without criticisms from all his groomsmen, then go back a second time with them. We aren’t doing this until at least February or March (our wedding is in November). So his groomsmen will probably go in April or May, which is 6-7 months out.

As for the tasting, the venue should be able to assist you with that. Our venue actually reached out to us this past September and asked if we’d like to come to try out the fall menu. We went even though we had a year to go so we could support our venue and give them a little money to help them through covid and also to see what they offered in fall so we aren’t scrambling next fall with our choices. I have a friend who just got married and she also did her tasting the year before in the season she was getting married, so it all really depends.

Me and my husband went to pick everything out I wanna say 5-6 weeks before the wedding (they rented everything). Everything had to be ordered a month before. Even if you order it months ahead of time I won’t come in until a day or 2 before the wedding.
The only reason I could see ordering it way ahead of time is if you are having things custom made.

My husband's groomsmen's rentals came from Men's Warehouse and they were told to get measured 4-6 months out, but one of the employees there told me they don't really need it until a month out at the latest. The 4-6 months is just what the company sets as standard. I was told a month before the event would be fine b/c that gives them plenty of time to get them in and see if anything needs to be swapped out for a different size before the wedding day. The rentals came in two weeks before our wedding and each of our groomsmen tried their rentals on when the day my husband went to pick them up.

As far as tastings go, your venue should set something up with their chef to have you taste your options for the wedding if you're going with their catering. My husband and I opted for an outside vendor for catering and after they gave us their options, we picked what we were most interested in and they set up a time for us to come try everything and make our final decisions. If you're going with your venue for food, this should be discussed before you sign the contract and it should also be listed in your contract.

I did my food tasting BEFORE I decided to hire any caterers. I got engaged on 11/10/2019 and when I got from Japan I immediately started going to bridal shows and cake tastings. I say the sooner the better! In addition, I would have the groom and his men try on their attire at many different places a few months before so that they can make a decision. Smiley smile
