When to use menu cards

Dana, on May 21, 2013 at 8:30 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Pardon my ignorance, but are menu cards necessary? We're having a plated dinner. Do I need to remind guests of the entree options, and let them know what kind of bread, salad, sides and dessert will be served as well? Just curious if there is a protocol I should be following here ...

Thanks, everyone!

I'm also having a plated dinner. I ordered 1 menu card for each table off of VP and listed both entrees with the sides as well as butter, coffee station, and cake/smores bar for dessert. I probably wouldn't have used them but I needed stuff to fill my VP order.

Not necessary, but I've seen them placed either on a frame at the table (one per table) or at each individual seat, generally presented in a napkin. You can google for images.

Thanks, Jenn! I also was planning on using VP. Did you use the rack cards for your menus?

I used an actual menu card because I liked the design. Here's a picture (hopefully it works). 20 of them (one per table) cost $2.57.

P.S. - Last question, sorry! How did you get them so cheap?? The best deal I've seen on VP lately is 50% off thru RetailMeNot ....

I bought a Groupon ($17 for $75 worth of product). Then, I used the 50% off RetailMeNot. If you spend an additional $25 you get free shipping. So, I ended up spending $42 total for business cards (as thank you's for each place setting), thank you cards, menu cards, tote bag, programs, address labels, 3 sticky notes, and a note pad.

You still have a good bit of time, there are always Groupons out there! Create a thread when you are ready to order and I'm sure someone will be able to direct you to one!

I used to Rack cards on VistaPrint for our menu cards too. I think I used a Groupon similar to Jenn.

You have some time so you can wait to see if a groupon comes out. I think I did mine about a month or two before the wedding.

One per table is certainly fine.

In our case, our menus served triple duty: (1) to indicate which courses were coming up next, (2) as place cards for seating at the table, and (3) to easily indicate the individual's meal selection to the waitstaff.

They were very easy and inexpensive to make - we used heavy-weight textured resume paper and our printer. (we printed two per page) Each ribbon indicated a meal option: light blue for chicken, red for beef, purple for vegetarian and a dark blue meant it was a special request for dietary reasons.

We printed each menu adding the person's name in the "header section". Then as they RSVP we add the appropriate ribbon. As the seating chart is confirmed, we'll separate them by tables so they're ready to be placed at the appropriate place setting in a pocket-folded napkin

Below is a picture of our menus ....
