When to take first-dance lessons?

Shannon, on September 18, 2019 at 3:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
My fiance and I would like to take dance lessons. It would be primarily for our first dance. We still have a little over a year before our wedding. We've looked online at instructors but have yet to actually reach out to any because we assume there is still plenty of time.

That begs the question though: When is it suggested to actually start these lessons?

If it makes a difference, I would say we are, together, very much beginners. I have some experience learning choreography, but only as a former majorette. My fiance has no prior experience with choreography.

My FH & I took dance lessons (still are actually) and are having a highly choregraphed dance. We did a 15 private lesson pack with 2x group lessons & started at the end of March. We did 1x a week mostly, skipping a few weeks for vacation etc. We have our next (group lesson) this Friday night, where we will perform the entire dance in front of everyone (super nervous, but really good practice to feel what it will be like to have everyone staring at you). After that we have 1x more private lesson.

We also practice our dance a lot - probably 4 - 5 days a week, 3 - 5 times per day. I seriously think to myself - why we didn't just decide to sway... LOL

We started 2 months before. We are both beginners. We took 4 private lessons but we haven't practiced on our own at all. I wish we started sooner, maybe 3 months before, and practiced at least 1-2x a week.

We started about 4 months before! We went once a week for 10 weeks. We mostly started then because my husband was on summer break for work so it was most convenient.

My sister gave us 2 lessons as a Christmas gift last year, and we ended up adding 5 more. We started I guess 6 weeks out from the wedding, and probably should have practiced more than we did...plus we had to squeeze in 2 classes a week before the wedding, when there was definitely other things I could have been doing. Our last class was probably our worst, but it went off almost perfectly at the wedding!

I think this depends on whether you just want to learn a set routine or learn the actual fundamentals of ballroom or whatever dance style you choose. We are still 7 months out but are almost at the end of a 6 week beginner ballroom course, we plan to retake it in October to cement it and then maybe have a few private lessons in the New Year. We don't want to do a specific routine though, we want to learn properly how to ballroom and apply it to any piece of music. I think if you are learning a set routine that you can just commit to memory you probably don't need to start learning so far out if it's pretty basic, but obviously something more complicated will need a lot of time to practice.

We took 4 lessons. I wish we had taken 6 lessons and started earlier. We started 3 months out. I liked the timeline but should have accounted for 2 more lessons.

I would recommend taking them at least 5-6 months prior to the wedding and if you want to do actual choreography for the wedding, I would do 9-10 lessons Smiley smile
