When to take engagement photos??

Nazaret, on May 22, 2017 at 8:00 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 15

I'm getting married next year on April and I want to take engagement photos but I don't know when. I was thinking July because it will be warm but I wasn't sure if that's too early to take them. Also what do you use those pictures for? Do you use them for invitations or in a video or just for fun???

I don't think July is too early! Also, yes you can use them for your save the dates or on your invitations or even have some photos blown up at your wedding!

We took ours soon after we got engaged and waited a year and half to get married. I think anytime in your engagement is completely fine!

I am also getting married next April. I am taking them next week because I want the look of spring/summer for my photos. It's all about what type of image you want for your photos and you should do it during that season.

You can take them anytime. We got engaged last January and took ours in July because it was very warm!

We used our engagement photos as a way of getting to know our photographer (and have her get to know us). I think it's really helpful to see things that you like about their style and things you'd like them to do differently on the wedding day, such as certain poses that you don't like.

ETA- You can definitely take them at anytime! But I'd wait until you book a photographer because most offer an engagement session in their packages :-) And if you wanna use them for STD's, the earlier the better.

Keep in mind that many wedding photographers include your engagment pictures as part of your wedding package. So it makes sense that your photos would be done after you have contracted your photographer. You can use them for STD, Wedding Decor, FB profile pics, his/her selfie shirts...whatever your heart desires.

We mailed-out our save the dates 10 months before our wedding. Hubby's aunt has a great camera, so she took a bunch of informal shots and we used one of them for our StD magnets.

I had no interest in posting 100 engagement session proofs, in various outfits/poses, like I've seen some people do on social media. WE also didn't want any prints, since we knew we'd rather have wedding photos in our home.

We didn't chose a photographer until a few months later. Their engagement sessions were free, but only if they were taken in the studio and didn't include prints, so we said forget that!

Orrrrrrrr you can take some cool winter photos or late fall photos, so you have a variety of professional photos of you 2 (since wedding pics will be summer).

We took spring photos since it's the "opposite" for winter Smiley smile

I got engaged in november, I am getting married in March and i got photos done in April!! They were something I won and had to be used by a certain date. I think it is essentially up to you. If you want to use the pics for save the dates you want to keep the timing in mind. We will be doing a second shoot closer to october/November since we have another shoot with our actual wedding photographer. Also, some people don't do them at all so I think it's totally up to your situation. We will probably use ours for invitations and just to have since i love pictures!

I'm getting married in April too and plan on taking engagement pictures in September/October timeframe. I would take them earlier but I need to lose 20lbs lol.

Once you have your photographer, I'd say you can take them anytime. We are taking ours in early June and plan on using a pic for our STDs. I think it's also nice to spend more time with your photographer to get to know each other and know what to expect on wedding day. It will also be nice just to have more pictures of us Smiley smile I think some people have pictures displayed at their wedding too.

Depends on where you live ... if you're doing July, I'd pick the coolest point the day to avoid the heat/humidity. Its never 'too early' -- unless you want to wear cool weather clothing for your session Smiley winking (just avoid the holiday rush period of September thru late November when everyone wants portraits for the holidays unless you book now ... if you wait too long to book, availability will be limited). We're using ours for STD's as well as to print for our home & our parents. We'll incorporate a few from the engagements & the wedding day in the Christmas cards I'm planning to design to send out this year as well. Haven't decided yet, but, since we have a very small guest list, I may print one of them to include with the invitations as well ...

I agree with what previous posters said about the timing. Outside of that, we used our pics to create our save the dates and will also use the pics for our guestbook as well.
