When to start pre-marital counseling

FutureMrs, on February 2, 2012 at 6:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

I have been with my FH for five years and have been engaged for almost three...the wedding isn't for another two. Its a long engagement because we are both college students and will be getting married after we graduate. I am wondering how far in advance of the wedding is a good time to start pre-marital counseling or if you think we need it because we have been together for so long. Opinions and advice please! Thanks ladies!

Doesn't matter how long you have been together, pre-marital counselling will be sure to uncover something that you didn't know and help you deal with it. Any couple could benefit from it. As far as how far in advanced, i don't think it really matters. My Fh and I are currently going through that "1001 questions to ask before you get married" book that everyone here raves about and it's opened some stuff up.

I say start now! It never hurts to do it early. Counseling isn't meant to fix problems. It's supposed to get you talking, and teach you tools and tricks on how to communicate with each other! It doesn't matter how long you have been together. My parents have been married 38 years, and they still learn new things about each other. What counseling does is teach you how to compromise and work together. It teaches you how to fight- fairly.

We did ours a year ago, so pretty early. I think anytime you start is fine, and if you do it early it may give youa chance to work on some problems that may come up before the wedding!
