When To Start Planning

Maria, on October 15, 2019 at 3:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
I recently got engaged to my most favorite person and I couldn’t be more excited! He was deployed a few days ago and he’ll be gone for 9-10 months. We set a date but it won’t be for quite a while (October 9th, 2021 to be exact). I’ve been looking at dresses and venues, working on invite lists, and doing some basic planning things, but when should I send out Save the Dates and order them? What should/can I work on now? It feels a little premature to be planning the wedding as it’s almost two years away. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Setting a budget and choosing a venue is key. IF you can nail that down as soon as possible, perfect. They set the rest of the tone for your wedding plans.

I wouldn't worry about Save the Dates, guests list, bridal party, etc for at least another year. You never know what can happen between now and then.

My FSIL planned her entire wedding 2 years out and now she's finding she needs to change just about everything halfway through. She's not friends with some of her girls anymore, the baker she chose won't deliver to the venue, and she's changed her "theme" about 3 times already.

Mine isn’t for two years either! The first thing I did was create a budget, a possible guest list and i just booked my venue!! I’m not planning on doing my save the dates until next fall after we do our engagement photos

We also started with a little over 2 years to plan. A lot of the initial stuff was just idea planning, talking about colors, styles, wedding size, etc. The first real thing we did was book our venue, which we did about 22 months before our wedding date. Some venues we toured were happy to book us so far in advance, but others were not able to book us until 12-18 months out from the date (they still let us tour though!). We are now 18 months out and starting to look more at florists, photographers, other vendors, etc. Our goal is to send Save the Dates exactly one year before our wedding and also have a hotel block set up by then. Basically, there's stuff you CAN do but nothing you NEED to do right now. If you feel like checking out a few venues then go for it! I think the planning is more fun and less stressful when you have so much time so enjoy it Smiley smile

Okay, so I’m definitely going to set a budget! Or try to, at least. There’s a couple factors I have to consider, so it’ll be pretty general for a while, but it’ll be a start! Thank you for the input!

I definitely had the same thought about the planning being more enjoyable with the amount of time before the big day! Thank you for your input!

Our wedding is October 16th, 2021. We're currently getting the venue booked and the next thing we'll be doing is getting our caterer.

I would for sure set a budget and find a venue first. In my area, the good venues are already completely booked for 2020 and the venue we're booking is already halfway full in October 2021! As for other things, we're waiting a little bit. Probably 18 months out is when we'll start looking for photographer, videographer, florists, etc.
