When to start looking for apartments?

Kara, on July 26, 2016 at 10:18 PM Posted in Planning 1 17

My fiance and I do not live together and will not be living together before the wedding. Our wedding is May 13th, 2017. I currently live in my own apartment and that lease is up in April 2017, so I plan to move into the apartment a month ahead of him.

With the private property that I now rent, I got the lease on a lucky whim, so not very much planning was involved at all. What is the protocol with how far in advance you need to sign a lease prior to moving in, or when should we start looking for apartments?

Thanks!

It depends. I've signed anywhere from a couple months to weeks before. I'd start looking a few months before but remember that places go quickly.

It all depends on your location and the availability. In my experience you can usually sign a least at a max of 3 months out. I'd call the complexes you're interested in and see what sort of timeframe you'd need to sign a lease in to secure an apartment.

I signed my last lease about a week before we moved in. It really is a case-by-case sort of situation. If you're looking for a May 1 move-in date, I would look mid-to-late March but as PPs said, a lot depends on availability. Some places are rented very quickly after the vacancy is listed.

You should check with your apartment. Most places are on either a 60 or 30 day notice. We found our apartment late April-Early May and I told my apartment on May 27 that I wouldn't be renewing my lease. We moved into our new apartment July 8th and our lease ends at the old apartment tomorrow. I would start looking 2 1/2 to 3 months from your lease end date.

It depends where you go. We moved last year and started looking really early because we were antsy to get out, and some places wouldn't even give us the time of day. The place we moved into we gave them our security deposit in July for an oct 1st move in because they are in such high demand and literally have a wait list.

    Depends on the place.

60 days notice is the standard that must be given when someone is planning to move out, assuming you're looking at managed apartments, not private apartments. I'd start looking a few months out to get some ideas of what y'all like, then assume that 60 days out they'll know actual availability and you can make decisions

We signed both of our leases the day we moved in. We put deposits down where we moved to once we made the decision to move there...about a month in advance.

Start looking online and set your budget. I would look 2-3 months out and sign a lease about 6 weeks before you move. That way, you have time to pack up your old apartment, hire movers, etc.

It depends where you are, but most complexes require a 60 day notice to vacate from their residents. With that being said, they will know their availability about 60 days out, which means you could potentially lease an apartment in February to move into in April. Does that make sense?

I would start looking fairly early (around January) but it really just depends on where you live and how often vacant apartments come up.

Also, check their policy about adding another tenant on.

I moved into an apartment that wouldn't allow extra tenants to move in after I signed the lease.

It all depends on your area as well.

Living in/near Seattle I could find an apartment within a week that fit all the criteria I needed. Here, it took weeks, and a little inside help to find an apartment that fit our needs.

Depends so much on location - typically places won't go up until the month before they are ready for move in.

Personally - if my lease was up end of april and i was getting married. I would try to find a place to move into April 1st. I would pay rent 2 months to avoid having to move in 1 or 2 days 2 weeks before i got married.

If you could afford it. That is what i would suggest. Look end of feb- march for a place to rent april 1

Most places require a 60 day notice, so for example, the landlord would be listing a place the last week of February or first week of March for a May 1st lease.

For everyone who keeps saying that a 60 Day Notice is typically required. That's actually specific to your state or municipality. Every state has their own laws. Some states require 30 days, some as little as 20 days before the end of the month. OP should learn her state's local landlord-tenant laws to know how much notice tenants have to give. That will determine when the new places learn of their availability.

Also, OP, I imagine you and your FH will be signing your new lease together and FH will just move in after the wedding? Be sure to budget for rent for 2 apartments during that time before the wedding while FH is liable on the new lease too.

It depends on where you live. In my small college town, I signed my lease the day before I moved in. When I lived in Boston, the only reason I found somewhere to live was because a friend of a friend needed a roommate quickly (and that was after about three months of looking). Scope out Craigslist in your area for a better ideas. Good luck!

You probably want to give a 30-60 day notice to your current place and then go see other properties. Anything later than that, most properties won't know their vacancies for April. So I'd start looking maybe late Feb, early March.

I would go look at least a couple months before and decide which places you like. That gives you some flexibility to choose when you move in or what floor plans and buildings.
