When to start dress alterations for bridal portraits?

FSTL, on September 26, 2017 at 1:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

Hey everyone!

FH and I finally have under a year to go lol! So exciting!

I purchased my dress during a sample sale a few months back, and it is about a size too big. I'm wondering when I should start alterations...? I was thinking in February/March since I will be doing bridal portraits, but I'm not sure. My dress has been sitting in my closet, since the bridal shop I purchased it at doesn't do in house alterations.

My first alterations began 4 weeks before my wedding. Second fitting was 2 weeks prior.

I think Feb/March is too far away, usually it's much closer to the wedding.

Thanks! So June/July would be more accurate?

I've already added the bridal portrait session to my photography package, but my photographer and I haven't settled on a date yet.

ETA- I'm also asking because I don't have a seamstress yet. The bridal shop I purchased my dress at doesn't do alterations.

@Mrs.Fall did you do bridal portraits? I guess what I'm really looking for is an accurate timeline of when to do alterations/bridal portraits before the wedding

My bridal portraits were done before the ceremony began since I had 90 minutes for my first look location (and some where done in the hotel as well). I know it's mainly a southern thing, but I just can't imagine putting on the dress before the wedding, and doing hair/makeup twice.

I thought most brides who do it the way you're describing do it the week of the wedding??

Hmmm @gymrat I hadn't heard that they're typically done the week before the wedding. I live in TX and they're pretty common here. The hair and makeup I'll be using is from my trial, the HMUA company I booked told me their clients usually do engagements or bridals after their trial.

I'm sure I'm wrong. Maybe a month or two prior? Hopefully some brides who have done portraits will chime in.

I did mine a month before the wedding. But I also didn't need much done to it

My alterations will start at the end of October and my wedding is the end of December.. My seamstress says she doesn't usually start 2 month before but since there are so many holidays in between, it's a good idea. Also my dress has a corset back so I can make a lot of adjustments myself.
