When to Serve Dinner

Caylin C., on May 6, 2014 at 10:47 AM Posted in Planning 0 9

So we had our meeting with the priest yesterday and can now finalize our timeline. Here's what it looks like.

Ceremony 1:00-1:30

Travel Time

Cocktail Hour 2:00-3:00

Reception 3:00-7:00

My question is, with this timeline when should we serve the meal? It starts way to late to be lunch, but still to early to be dinner. Would it be strange to wait and serve dinner an hour or two into the reception? We could do our dances and toasts first. Since the wedding goes until 7:00 we definitely can't skip the meal altogether. What would the wise WW ladies do?

Oh and there will be appetizers at cocktail hour. So guests won't be too hungry or drinking on empty stomachs.

I'd go ahead an do an early dinner around 5-6 pm, but that's just me. Will any food items be left stationary after the cocktail hour but before the main course(s) are served? You could let people mingle/dance a little and snack some if they want... that would just be my suggestion.

I would say to serve dinner between 4:30-5pm since people will most likely be missing lunch even though they are having cocktails I think an early bird dinner time would be fine and it is still ealry that some may grab a pizza on their way home from the wedding

Yes the apps will all be left stationary for people to snack on if they want. 5ish is what I was thinking. Would you all be happy/okay with waiting two hours to eat?

If there are snacks at the cocktail hour then I would be ok waiting until 5pm for dinner. That is a usual dinner time for me anyways, so the snacks ahead of time are extra bonus. I think it would be fine to have toasts and such first before dinner is served.

A question though, why are you ending at 7pm? Why not go all evening for dancing and such?

We're renting the venue by the hour and it is a Sunday wedding so people likely won't want to stay too late anyway. We may tack on another hour though since the timeline is a little different than we had planned.

I'd say a 5:00pm dinner would put you in good shape.

@Caylin - ah ok. that makes sense then. I would serve dinner around 4:30-5pm. It might be early for some people, but then being a sunday people probably want to get home before it gets too late and will head out after dinner. So do the toasts and such first then dinner.
