When to send new invitations?

Samantha, on September 4, 2020 at 1:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Hi all,

My fiance and I got engaged in May 2019. We sent out invitations for our OG wedding date (11/7/20) in January of 2020. Of course, then covid hit and we stopped planning entirely in April, both of us feeling like things were not going to be safe for our guests. We sent a notice of postponement and an announcement on our website, but we should have an updated contract for our new date next week (which will be for 11/2021).

So, now I really just don't know when to send invitations out, or if we should do the entire process again and send save the dates as soon as we confirm and then invitations on the normal timeline.

Emails, in my opinion, aren't really sufficient (especially for older guests or people who just don't check their emails much), and I also feel like sending actual invitations over a year out is probably not fair because people might just lose them and not ever RSVP, or they might RSVP too soon and then plans change.

Just trying to get some insight into what other people are doing or feel is the right way to approach the situation.

Thanks everyone and hope you and your families are all safe and healthy!!

Send out invites at the standard 6-8 weeks before.

And yes email doesn't work for many older guests.
Send out save the dates 6-12 months prior so guests can prepare.

We had the same situation – our original wedding date was 11/20, and we have rescheduled for 11/21. We just sent out our new STDs last week. I know it’s super early, but there are soooooo many weddings being rescheduled to next year, we wanted to make sure we claimed our date before anyone else did LOL We will send out new invitations next year at the usual time.

Right!! That's my concern too. We knew we were postponing early but a lot of people whose weddings were supposed to be this year already got new dates for next year, although thankfully no fall weddings yet lol... but I'm nervous being at the end of next year too because it's going to be so insane!!

But thank you for the advice!!

I agree with the previous comments - I would send the invitations out 6-8 weeks ahead of time.

Agree with previous comments about sending the invites out closer to the actual date, but you could send out change the dates sooner so people know in advance!

We actually sent “Change the Date” cards and we will be sending new invites 6-8 weeks prior.
