When to Reach Out to dj

Sara, on October 10, 2018 at 1:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

So, we booked our DJ way back in April. Our wedding is July 2019. When is a good time to meet with the DJ to go over songs and what not? Is now too early? Will they reach out to me first?

We booked our DJ last month for our July 2019 wedding. We agreed to talk 2-3 months prior, then again in July. I think right now it's way too early.

We booked our DJ in june of 2017 for our 09/18 wedding. We didn't speak to him again until the following the july, and that was only to ask him if the live guitarist could hook up to his sound system. Other than that our contract said he would reach out to us 1 month before the wedding. We ended up scheduling our phone meeting two weeks prior to the event, and that is when we finalized all songs, and the reception timeline with him.

I would go through you contract to see if any dates are listed, but honestly you don't need to speak to him unless you have a specific question this far out.

We didn't really talk to ours until 2 weeks before the wedding. It's never too earily to get a head start on your playlist.

I booked my DJ a year ago, my wedding is in 3 months, we have only communicated on the phone once and then through email every time I make a payment. His email and checklists are always straightforward and there is really no need to meet to go over songs etc. We plan to send him our final checklist a month before the wedding (which has a timeline and songs on it) as well as confirming details about time, etc. If he has questions he will likely call us to discus it all but we probably will not meet him face to face until the wedding day.

It depends on what your wanting to meet for. Ours will contact us a week prior to go over final details. But other than that we do everything through an online portal. They have a basic form for us to fill out with info and then an area where we can make a must play and do not play list. I have also emailed asking a few questions here and there (can they get any song, how will it work for my aunt to sing during the ceremony etc.)

We met with ours around the 30 day mark, so we will still be fresh in their mind!

I would begin to engage the DJ again a month or two prior.

It's too early to reach out - You can certainly start making your own list that you keep track of songs you want and those you don't but it's too soon to give that to the DJ... Consider how much new music could come out in the next 5-8 months... You could have a totally different play list in April than you do now...

We met with our DJ twice. Once, a year before the wedding when we hired him, and the second time about a month before the wedding to go over what songs we like / hate. You have plenty of time before you need to meet up with them. In the meantime you can start getting your songs together for ceremony, grand entrance, first dance, etc. so you're ready when it is time to meet.

I booked our DJ back in December 2017 for our March 2019 wedding. We haven’t talked since then. We have to send in a paper with all his questions (do and don’t plays, how to introduce us and the party, who is saying the prayer etc) at the 6 weeks mark.

Mine provided me with a 5 page document of sample songs and he said highlight your favorites, and mark off the ones you hate, and we will make a list from there as well as a 1 page "schedule" doc.... Right now we are 3 months out, and we finally go through the list and schedule finalized, sent it to him. He said he will keep it in our file, but probably won't look at it until January (our day is 1/20), so about 2 weeks out is when we will finalize everything! He has 24 years (or more) of experience, so I am not worried.

Our DJ contacted us about 2 weeks before the wedding. He sent us a questionnaire to fill out with particular songs to play for the ceremony, first dance, entrance, etc. as well as a "must play", "do not play" and suggested play so he could get a feel for what we wanted. We had a call with him a week before to discuss the list and for him or us to ask any questions. There really isn't any reason to speak to the DJ until shortly before your wedding. Check your contract for a timeline.

I think anything more than 3 months out from your wedding is too early.
