My wedding is May 1st and I am not doing any tastings until sometime in March.

Depends on how popular the baker you are looking into is. I know some bakers book a year in advance, some 6 months, and some only a few months in advance. Your best bet would be to start calling around and see what different places tell you. Our date is a year after yours and I want to have our cake baker picked out and booked before September of 2010, so a year in advance. I just don't want to run into a problem if I find someone I like and then they have already booked our date. So really I don't think it is ever to early. But like I said it all depends on the baker, so calling around is really the best thing you can do.

Let me adjust my answer. I already booked my cake person and my reception venue. They have been booked for months now. But I am not actually doing the tastings until March.

Jamie, what happens if you don't like what you taste? Have you previously tasted their cakes? Or was the cake person provided with the reception venue? I know the first reception venue we looked at had a cake person included in the price and I was freaking out that I wouldn't like their cakes. Just curious if your situation is the same as mine would have been and what happens if you don't like their work.?.

You can start now. There is nothing wrong with doing more than 1 FREE cake tasting!!! mmmmmmm cake. If you like it, you like it. There is no reason to wait a certain time. Our engagement was only 7 months, and I think we started looking at cakes about 4 months before the wedding.

The bakery I wanted to get my cake from gets booked really early in advance so I already had my cake tasting and ordered my cakes.

We did our cake tasting about 14 months out because our baker is very good and they book really quickly. We got to do a few tastings just to make sure thats what we wanted, we didnt pick our fillings until recently.

I've already been to 3 places for tastings and have 4 more to go to between now and the second week in Feb. I hope to have the baker booked by the end of Fed. just beause July is a busy time of year and most of the good bakers around here wont do more then 2 - 4 cakes per weekend.

MOB here to say that I don't understand why you wouldn't want to get this taken care of and off the "to-do" list asap. Way too much going to come along that can't be done in advance. Do it now and check it off the list!

We did both before we booked either of them. Needed to know what we were getting before we booked

For me I don't book cakes more than a year in advance. I will start holding consultations for weddings that are within a year of that date. Some dates book earlier than others. I was booked for Sept 18, 2010 by Jan 2010. It all depends on the baker and your wedding date.
