When to do alterations

Heather, on June 14, 2019 at 8:05 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 8
I'm getting married (destination -Jamaica) on 11/26/19. The MOB and bridesmaid dresses are already in and mine is expected before the end of July. My skirt has the horsehair layers and I've been told by at least one seamstress that they need 3 months.(short girl here so shortening is the big part. I'm concerned about doing alterations too early. I put on a ton of weight (for me) the year prior and went through a medically supervised weight plan. Lost the weight (inches) and weening off the keto plan to maintenance now. I seem to be keeping the weight off and I wont stuff my face with sugar like I did last year. However, I worried even a little weight will be a problem if the dress is altered to exactly where I am today. When should I start alterations? Should I just have them do the skirt and postpone the final fittings on the top until right before or just get it done and watch my weight like a hawk. I'm 44 and always petite and will never allow myself to blow up like I did last year but the dress looks unforgiving and it's much more difficult to take out. Any advice?

You can start your alterations at 3 months out then schedule your final fitting for the week before or even week of just to make sure it fits perfectly.

I was married last October. I started my alterations in August, had another fitting in September and had my final fitting 9 days before my wedding. I could have actually scheduled the final fitting even closer to the date but since we were traveling for our wedding I just didn't have the time.

I'm also starting my alterations 3 months out as recommended by the people doing them. I'm also really short, so mine is pretty much taking a ton of length off and maybe taking it in a little. When I made the appointment, they told me it takes most people 3 appointments to get the dress right, so I'd guess that even if you're losing some weight in-between the appointments, they'll be able to handle it.

If it was me I would do alterations as soon as my dress came in. I had my dress altered in March for May bridals (my wedding is in November) and it took a month for alterations. Definitely keep in mind your dress has to be completely ready for bridals if you choose to take them.

I started my alterations at the end of May as they suggested 3 months ahead of the wedding. Supposed to go back for a fitting next week and if everything is good, I get to take the dress home. However, I too went on a diet (low carb) to drop a few pounds. At the moment, I feel like I am at my limit (of doing low carb) Lol. I am also worried whether I can maintain my weight until the wedding, but would do my best to keep it off.

Also if you don't mind, how are you weaning yourself off keto? I sort of tried doing keto but ended up doing mostly low carb.

I did "Ideal Protein" which I had done years ago and my mom and aunt lost a ton of weight. It is under supervision of a coach (under a dr) and it is 4 phases. It is mostly veggies and meat along with their protein food (very tasty) and supplements. It is very specific to maintain muscle and target only fat. You lose inches which is the focus more than pounds. It's basically a reset of your pancreas to get your body out of insulin resistance. If you follow it exactly, you lose inches/pounds very fast. You eat plenty but you are giving up sugar/carbs, alcohol and you cant do heavy exercise in the first 2 phases. After you get to your goal, you move to phase 3 and start reintroducing dense carbs/healthy fats into breakfast. You reduce the food/snacks that you get from them. Then the 4th maintenance phase is all your own food but you can have 1 snack of theirs if you want. The coach helps you monitor which foods your body is ok with and what doesn't work well. You are learning to eat clean/healthy and just maintaining that. Cheat days are ok in the end. You just have to balance. I couldnt believe how many inches I lost so quickly. I lose 4 inches in the thorax (right under your boobs). The hard part is getting used to food prep and making most of your meals yourself. I lost 23 pounds and 22 inches in just a couple if months but I wasnt big to begin with. Larger people lose it much faster and some can eventually get off insulin or blood pressure meds. I wanted it for looks and health. You cant half-ass it though. Follow it and it works. You might feel crappy for a few days from carb withdrawal and it takes a week or 2 to adjust but then go on robot mode and the fat/inches come off. You can find programs in chiropractor or wellness centers but some stand alone. Just Google it. There are good videos on how/why it works and it is a temporary program. They want you to graduate off of it but they will remain a support coach after you are through the phases.

Thanks. I figured you would just do those on the day of the wedding.
