WHEN to buy your alcohol if providing your own??

Future Mrs. M, on March 1, 2013 at 3:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

I have searched and CANNOT find this discussed ANYWHERE...

Question is when is the best time to buy alcohol for your reception? We already know how much to buy and what we are serving (red wine, white wine, champagne, rum, mixers). We're not getting married until November but I thought if I hit a sale and was able to scoop things up here and there I could; however, I do not know how long these things keep, the best way to store them, etc.

Any advice?

Alcohol you can buy whenever. If you have space to store it, and find a sale, go ahead and grab it. At least for liquor and wine. If you're getting beer, make sure it's in a place where the temp will remain consistent as variations will mess with the flavor.

We'll be doing a keg for the beer so that's a day of sort of thing lol

Do you have to store the wine on it's side or whatever? If we get cases they don't come that way... so confused!

I bought vodka and rum over 6 mths ago and still got 4 months to go. If you but wine early you should be fine if its in the bottle. I'm waiting til may to buy beer!

Wine will come standing up. Yes you need to store it on its side. I am sure your safe with purchasing wine within a year of use. Wine needs to be kept cool and dark. So a dry basement would be a good place to keep it. Leave it in the box so it stays out of the light.

You only need to store the wine on its side if they have traditional corks. the reasoning is that the liquid stays against the cork, preventing it from drying out and / or breaking off into the wine. this is not necessary for rubber corks or screw top wines. more important is a consistant cool temperature and protection from light.

this is a great piece from wine spectator about storing wines
