When to buy bridemaids dresses??

Lydia, on July 27, 2010 at 4:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

How far in advance should you buy bridesmaid dresses? I'm assuming you can probably get them any time in advance so I guess I'm wondering when should you at least have them by? (1 year before wedding, 6 months, 4 months, etc.) ??

I'm looking for bridesmaid dresses now. I hope to have the girls order them at least 5-6 months in advance to ensure they come in with plenty of time to have alterations done.

My girls are procrastinators so i had them get theirs right when i picked them out... and some waited for months... my wedding is in aug and they ordered them in Feb/march... one i ordered in may since she wasn't going to do it... (in her defense there isn't a DB in her town and it wasn't online...) but my BM are all over the place so I wanted to make sure they had them and altered as soon as possible...

Most stores will tell you 6 months in advance to be safe. I'm having my girls order by the end of October for my May wedding.

I ordered my sisters in January and her wedding was June so six months in advance. But if you find something you like and they want to get that purchase out of the way, make them do it when you find the dress. Mine are ordering as soon as I find one. Going Thursday...so hopefully I will find what I want.

I'd say tell them early when you have it so that it's still on time after they procrastinate. I have a short engagement, so I'm not a safe comparison point, but I have one lady who's just now ordering hers (for a September wedding!). Had the dresses been through David's Bridal or a traditional bridesmaid dress place, she probably would have been out of luck.

About 6 months in advance. If you have 18 months in wedding prep and see dresses you want, get them. Just know that styles will likely change next year, so the further out you purchase them, the more likely you'd wished you'd waited until 4-6 months before the wedding.

I would however check with your bridal store on what they recommend and if they do alterations, how long those will take. Guaranteed at least 1-2 of your bridesmaids will need them, and that will dictate how far out you need to order them. Just don't wait till the last minute.

    Good Luck

Thanks all. I'm looking for a dark blue "marine" color for my BM dresses and a silver dress for my MoH. My wedding isn't until September of next year and I emailed my party to get together to look soon. I'm toying with the idea of having the 3 girls wear the same color dress but with different strap styles!!! I guess you can never buy too early but I just didn't want to buy too late, but in my head I was figuring the blue is kind of a winter color so there would be a better selection now than come next spring.
