When should we send out invitations?

When should we send out invitations? Why are save the dates necessary?

We have a year and a half till we tie the knot. What is the appropriate time to send out invitations? A family friend wants to hand write the invitations (she’s super into calligraphy right now) but I’m worried she will take too much time and guests won’t have enough notice. What should I do?

I feel save the dates are only necessary if you have a lot of out of town guests or guests you don't talk to a lot!

Usually save the dates go out 6-8 months before the date and invitations go out 6-8 weeks. If she wants to do the invitations for you, and you want her to, I would have her start now if you think she is going take a bit

Save the dates are only a necessity if you’re having a destination wedding, lots of out of town guests, a weekday wedding, or your wedding is on/near a holiday.
Invitations should go out 6-8 weeks before the wedding.

We have a little bit of time so I’ll start her on it now. At this point I’m just waiting on my parents to finish up deciding who they want to invite 😅

I know the feeling. I had to set a deadline to get them to give me names of family friends! You have time but definitely tell them you need it soon!

One year out is fine. Save the Dates are to give guests adequate time to request off work (Ex. Healthcare industry (me) need to request off 6 months out to attend) A STD allows me to request off . The Invitations go out 3-4 months - which reduces chances of being off. It is helpful for out of town guests also and its formal.

Invitations should go out about 8 weeks before the wedding. If you want the guests to have more notice than that, that's why STDs were invented.
