When should i put in my notice at my apartment to move?

Future Mrs. K, on May 14, 2019 at 4:24 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 16

This isn't exactly wedding related but somewhat is I guess since it's about mine and FH's first house together. Basically we are in the process of looking at houses and we found one that we really like. We are going to look at it on Thursday and if all goes well we will probably be putting in an offer on it and if everything went as planned we would probably be moving in, in early July, a week or two after the wedding. We currently rent an apartment and our lease is not up until the end of October, however, we are able to break it early. In order to break the lease we just have to give them 60 days notice. I am wondering, from people who have bought houses, when should I put in this 60 days? Someone told me to do it once we get our offer accepted but I am worried about doing that as things can technically still go wrong at that point and I don't want to be scrambling if something happened and the house fell through. I'm also worried about waiting too long to give the notice (like waiting until I get the keys to the house) because then I would be managing both places until the 60 days are up. What would you guys recommend?

As much as this stinks, I'd rather have two places to live than none, so I'd wait to give notice until you close on the house. Unless, you can break the apartment contract and beg for it back if something falls through with the house.

I know, I'm leaning toward just waiting until we close and have the keys. It will kind of suck to have to deal with both places for the 60 days but I guess it would also give us time to slowly move our stuff in and do any painting and stuff without being rushed.

I second waiting until you close on the house! A number of things can still go wrong even after an offer is accepted. A house closure can also take months so you might get screwed if it takes longer than you think/they say.

Yes, that is a good point too. If we went over the 60 days we would have nowhere to go if we still weren't at closing at that point. I definitely think we will just wait and play it safe. It would give us time to slowly move stuff in and paint and such too which I guess is an upside. Thank you!

I would wait until you close. Just because you want to move in July doesn’t mean they are willing to move out then. When we bought our house a few years ago we put an offer in in the beginning of June, and the sellers requested not to close until mid September. Luckily we negotiated to end of August when our lease was up.

You also may need to use some time for painting or any kind of work that needs to be done. I would highly recommend waiting to put notice in until you close if you can.

No problem! This happened to my friend. They were looking for a new house and needed the money from her old house as part of the down payment so she had to list it. The offer/loan was only based on if the old house was finalized. In the way it happened, she closed on her old house months before the new one so her, her husband, and three kids had to move in with her mom!

This can be good! It may seem wasteful to have two places, but like you said with painting and moving in, it may be better for a month or two if you can afford it! Or if you are like my case where we moved in the winter and the landlord forgot to get our heat turned on before we moved in so we were in the new apartment freezing for sleep and unpacking for a few days since we had no where else to go!

Moving really stresses me out, so I'm thankful we have some time. We are supposed to close on June 30th at the latest. FH has to be out of his apartment by July 28th. Worst case, he can put his stuff in storage and his company is willing to put him up in a hotel for a while. I'm still living with my parents and won't move in until after the wedding, but I'm going to slowly start moving my things to the new house.

Yeah, you definitely want to factor in painting and whatnot. It is far more likely that whatever house you buy is going to need something, even if it just some paint to make it your own. If you can afford the rent and the mortgage for 2 months, it will be easier to be able to paint an empty house. That's a tall order that some people can't do, however, which is understandable.

Oh my gosh both of those situations sound horrible! We could definitely make it work for those two months so I think it is worth it just for the peace of mind. We will definitely be waiting!

Yes that is definitely nice to have time to slowly move everything. I hate moving! I've moved 3 times in the past couple years so this will hopefully be my last move for a long time. Good luck with everything!

Yes, I definitely agree. We would be able to make it work for the 2 months so we will definitely be waiting. Thanks!

This! Especially because things can go wrong or slow down at any point in the process. We moved into a larger apartment about four weeks ago, and we ended up just paying for two apartments for those four weeks because it was cheaper than breaking our lease. It also gave us plenty of time to complete our move and deep clean the old apartment (and hopefully get us our deposit back!)

If you have a good relationship with your landlord, you could consider discussing your dilemma with them to see if they can work with you for a mutually beneficial compromise, but I wouldn't hold my breath if your apartment is run by a big leasing company.

I would put the 60 days notice when it closes and you get the key. You will want time to move out, furnish, and do any improvements you may want to do. It will also give you time post wedding which will be helpful. Less stressful as well.

I agree with everyone else about waiting until closing. You can also find out from the lender when your first mortgage payment is due. I had a good gap between the end of my lease and my first mortgage payment. There was no overlap. You can work with your real estate agent to negotiate the closing date.
