When is the first dance in reception timeline?

Nicole, on August 29, 2019 at 12:04 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16
When do you do the first dance? Right after introductions? Right after dinner? We are doing a very casual wedding & reception and we don’t have a coordinator so I’m getting all my details set up now. 23 days!!!!! Help!

Most of the weddings I've been to in my area (including ours) the first dance is right after introductions. But at my cousin's wedding in Ohio they did the first dance after dinner. I think it's partially a regional thing and partially just a personal preference thing.

Completely personal preference. We did ours after dinner because our dancing was in a separate area from dinner and we wanted our first dance to open the dance floor. But I’ve seen both ways!

We'll be doing our first dance right after our introduction, then we'll have my dad welcome everyone and say a blessing and start dinner!

I did mine right after our grand entrance since everyone's attention was already on us

We did it after dinner before dancing started.

That's a great idea! I normally see the couple dancing after their entrance. But I like the idea of getting the party started with the couple doing their dance after dinner. But it's something to think about because it depends on the timeline and where you're having your reception. For us, we're having everything in one place so we will see how that works out.

Yeah and we didn’t do an entrance because we just joined our own cocktail hour. So it’s definitely different for everyone.

You can do it whenever, no one will be expecting it at a specific time. Also, we are date twins! 23 days feels like a lifetime but also like I don't have enough time to get everything done!

I’ve seen both options. We are doing right after introductions, but that is personal preference since it’s a choreographed dance & we don’t want (me) to be obsessing about it.

We are doing ours right after the grand entrance and introductions. However, you can do the first dance whenever you like.

We did introductions, cake cutting, dinner, toasts, and then first dance. I didn't want to do the first dance before dinner, because we weren't planning on eating until 7, and I didn't want to push it back any later.

It's all preference. If you like the idea of the first dance being the dance right before the dance floor opens up then do it after dinner. if you like the flow of introductions right into dancing, then do that.

There's no right or wrong way.

We are getting everything out of the way immediately. Once we do our grand entrance into the reception it will be first dance, parent dances, BM & MOH toasts, and dinner and dancing.
