When is it too early to send out save the dates?

Chinda, on November 1, 2019 at 1:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 14
I just sent out a couple of save the dates to out of state family members. My wedding is in December 2020. I figured I could send out the save the dates a year prior because they all would have to fly north East. I have family all across the US (i already had to cut my guest list in half because my side is so big) and i just want to give them enough time to prepare for the flight tickets. Also my wedding is a week before Xmas so it’s going to be pricey. Unless they order tickets early enough?

Save the dates are normally send 6-8 months before the wedding, but can be sent up to a year in advance for destination weddings. You sent them a little early in my opinion, but there's nothing to do about it now lol

6-8 months out is typical. You can’t even purchase a flight a year out so it’s a little early but it’s okay.

If my family members are across the country i needed to send them now because half of them need to purchase the plane tickets and if i send it out 6-8 months in advance how would that give them enough time to let they’re jobs know “hey listen i have a wedding to go too i need the week before Xmas off” half of the time it’s not easy getting days off and what if someone already used they’re PTO? They wouldn’t want to come or they can’t afford to come because now plane tickets are up the roof?

It’s not that they can purchase the flights a year out it’s so they can know ahead of time and save because the prices are going to be high for the week before Xmas. Some of them need to know in advance so they can save for round trips and their hotel stays etc. but thanks

6 months-1 year generally gives most people enough time to make arrangements. Sending them more than a year in advance is pretty early, people normally think "oh that's not for more than a year, I'm not gonna worry about that right now". But there's nothing you can do now, it's not a big deal. You asked how early was too early, so I told you that it was too early in my opinion.

I understand. Our entire guest list had to travel to our wedding and we sent save the dates 7 months in advance and were fine. It’s not a big deal that you sent them a little early.

I think you are totally fine sending them out early. I sent mine out this week because a lot of our guests are flying in so I wanted to make sure that they could start making arrangements. Also a lot of jobs start taking vacation requests at the beginning of the year so I think it makes sense to send them when you did especially with it being close to a holiday!

I would say sending them a year out is fine if you have a lot of out of state guests. Otherwise we sent ours 7 months in advance (sent in August, getting married in March)!

I think anytime after a year is fine. I think of over a year as potentially too early as it has the possibility of confusing guests into thinking it is for this date in the present year (you’d be surprised how easily save the dates can confuse people!), but it’s not really a big deal if people have a general idea of your timeline already.

I would say not to send out later than 365 days before your event!

I think you would be fine to send them in January/February to avoid the holiday mail rush and still give guests plenty of time!

I would send them after the first of the year, so they don't get mixed in and missed with all the holiday cards people get.

I wouldn't send them out any earlier than January 2020. Probably closer to February or March though.
