When did you start receiving wedding gifts?

tinyred15, on March 6, 2017 at 3:08 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Hey everyone! My wedding is quickly approaching (12 days) and I wanted a little advice. We haven't received many wedding presents yet, which is fine, but I'm a little worried people will send them while we are away. We are having a destination wedding and will be away for 10 days! Do people wait last minute to send wedding gifts? As a precaution I put a hold mail form in to the USPS, but I'm not sure what to do if a gift arrives via UPS or FedEx. Or am I being overly paranoid and don't have much to worry about? Thanks!

Do you have a neighbor that you trust that can hold onto anything that arrives?

I had my shower last month (Feb 5th). I started receiving presents early January. Wedding is in 45 days.

ETA: We live in Las Vegas, wedding will be in CLE.

I'm worried about this too as we will be gone for 3 weeks! I've talked to my neighbor and she will take in packages for us

I would change your delivery address on your registries to a friend/parent/neighbor that will be home the majority of the time youre away. That way you can just pick up anything when you arrive home and not worry about it sitting at your door that long.

@La Grosera - Unfortunately, no. We are not very close to any neighbors. We just moved to our neighborhood not that long ago. :/ My FH and I have been debating have his coworker act as a "house sitter" but we feel bad and don't want to take advantage of her kindness. I think we may need to take the house sitter route regardless.

    I agree with APZ.

Personally, my wedding is in 47 days (April 23rd) and no one has ordered anything from our registries yet either. We have two–Bed, Bath and Beyond and Target. We only got registered at Target once we realized that Bed, Bath and Beyond may be too expensive for the average guest. :/

OP If the coworker is okay with it, I think you should definitely have a house sitter (just be sure to pay her something). It's always a good idea to have someone drive by and make sure your house isn't broken into/on fire while you're gone.

Right before the wedding, I switched our delivery address on our registries to my parents' house, that way any packages that came via something other than USPS (which I also put a hold on) would get delivered to their house and they could hold until we got back from our honeymoon. But, we didn't end up having any arrive after the wedding so that was good (a few cards did come in the mail). We got most of our gifts 1-3 weeks before the wedding I'd say (even several the day before the wedding as we were trying to leave for the rehearsal).

You can have UPS and FedEx hold your packages as well. This is what we did while we were on our honeymoon.

You can make the delivery address anything you want on your registry.

I would change the registry address asap if that is an option!

Thanks, everyone! After talking to my FH about it we are going to pay his coworker to "house sit." I appreciate all the replies! It would be easiest to just update my registry address, but we live in TX and none of our family lives here!

@Mrs. Knolle - I spoke to UPS and they charge $5 a package for the hold since I'm gone so long. Thanks for the suggestion though! I still need to check FedEx.

I would pay for a house sitter, or have everything shipped to a parents (or someone you are close to) house

I have my registry address set as my parents. I've had wedding presents trickling in since November

Fur FedEx you can also put a future delivery request in through Delivery Manager on FedEx.com

I think if his coworker is offering to house sit and you're willing to pay her for it, it's not taking advantage of her kindness at all. And if you don't have any neighbors that you know and trust just yet, that may be your best option.
