When did you do your tasting?

We booked our venue a few weeks ago who also provides catering. We just got our contracts back from the venue and they told us that we will be invited to do our tasting 60-90 days before our wedding. Is that normal? It seems really late to me. We are most likely doing a buffet, so we don't need to include menu selections on our invitations, but if we were doing a plated meal I don't think this would be enough time to choose our meals, print and mail invites, and request RSVPs? They also have other vendors at their tasting events, like hair and makeup, so you can see samples of their work, but I plan to have all those things booked by then so that seems kind of pointless to me.

Our tasting will be in March (getting married in September). Our venue hosts a big event each year for everyone that has an upcoming event being held there that year, that also includes other vendors. They typically hold them in January, but they are completely renovating the building so it was pushed back.

It can’t hurt to ask if they’ll let you do your tasting earlier! And you can ask what vendors will be attending this event and reach out to them separately to set up meetings. To echo your concerns, we just ordered our invites last week (100 days out) and we were rushing to decide on a menu. Don’t to that lol. Start working on that early. Also, our venue said they usually don’t schedule rehearsals until 30 days before the wedding. I kindly said that wouldn’t work because I needed to plan our rehearsal dinner and let the bridal party know when to make their travel arrangements, and our coordinator was more than happy to work with us. Can never hurt to ask!

We did our tasting in October for our December wedding. It was a plated meal. We already knew that we planned to offer a beef, chicken and fish entrée (plus a silent vegetarian choice) so we were able to include those icons in our invitation. The tasting was merely for us to choose the exact entrée and sides we planned to offer (there were several in each category to choose from). Menus do not go with the invitation so this was plenty of time, plus the menu selections change based on the seasons so we had to wait until it was closer to winter to taste the winter menu selections.

I thought that was late too, but this is how our venue does it too. Not 60 days, as that's cutting it too close for invitations and RSVPs. But our coordinator said we'll schedule it for about 3-4 months before the wedding. I wanted to do it right then when we booked the venue! lol

Part of the reason our venue does it this way is that their menu changes slightly with the seasons. They have the main core menu available all the time, but there are variables that change, based on what vegetables and fruits are in season at the time, or what fish they are able to get. So, for a winter wedding, you wouldn't have the artichoke salad as a choice because they are out of season, but they have that salad in the summer.

We did our tasting in April and we're getting married in March. We're doing a buffet as well.

I believe our venue coordinator suggested anyway from March of 2019 - December of 2019 for tasting just so that we for sure know what we want and so they can make sure that they're prepared to place a bulk order for all of the ingredients Smiley smile

Our wedding is in October and they asked for us to come to a tasting in April even though we chose the buffet option.

We did tastings before we even selected a caterer so that seems super late to me but maybe things are different for you.
