When are you cutting the cake?

Jaimie, on April 22, 2014 at 4:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

My reception starts at 7 PM and ends at 11 PM. I was thinking about doing the cake cutting at 10 PM. Is that too late? I'm paying for all day photography, but they will leave after the cake is cut so I'm trying to get my moneys worth.

That's really late. Some of the older, or younger guests (if you're allowing kids) may have left by then.

We're cutting ours right after dinner before the dances.

ETA: Wait? You're paying for a photographer who will leave after the cake is cut no matter what time you cut it?

We're cutting our cake right after our first dance. Our reception starts at 8:00 p.m. and we want to give them time to slice it up so that it can be served with dessert. Plus we want to get it out the way.

And I'm with Mrs_M To Be - The photographer is going to leave after you cut the cake whatever time it happens?

Due to venue scheduling we have to cut it super early, like around noon. The cake maker offers the option of alowing a cake cutting for photos followed by boxing it up and bringing it to our dinner venue hours later after dinner. I explained this option to my FMIL, and she said not to tempt her family with cake only to take it away again! I guess we're having noon cake!

I don't honestly understand cutting the cake at the beginning. A cake can be sliced in 10 minutes, so no need for that.

Cut it after dinner, about an hour and a half before the end of the night. If your photographer wants to fake if for photos so they stay within their timeframe.

We want to cut it right after dinner, but my venue might make us cut it immediately so they can slice and plate it....

That's what she said so I told her 10. I'm sure there are some restrictions and she'll get back to me on them if so. I may make it earlier, but I told her 10 for now.

Wow! I'm assuming your wedding is children-free? I've rarely ever stayed at a wedding later than 9 or 10pm. Are you serving dinner right at 7? I would eat, do speeches and then cut the cake. That'll probably be around 10pm anyway.

That's pretty late for cake cutting.

I plan to do mine after dinner. I am having a 3 tier cake for "display", which is the one we will save the top of and then do the cake cutting for pictures and whatnot. After that my cake cutter and server will cut and plate sheet cakes for the guests. They may even have the sheet cakes cut before that. My FHs Aunt is a baker and is doing my cakes and his other Aunt is helping cut and serve.

We have the same times for reception and were cutting the cake around 8:45. I think 10 is too late. Plus you don't want to have dancing, then make everyone stop for cake because they might not start back up again!

I think mine is about the same time! Reception starts around 7, after the plated meal is served etc Cake cutting will be at about 9:30. If people need to leave before, they can.. this is just how our timeline is working out.

From what I've read 2 hours after the start time is when the cake should typically be cut. Ours is 6-10, I think we will cut around 8:30.
