What your timeline for a 2 year engagement?

Marissa, on September 11, 2019 at 4:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hi everyone,

My FH and I are doing a 2 years long engagement. Getting married September 25, 2021. Any suggestions on a timeline for when to do things such as when to start looking at dresses, when to book your venue, when to make your guest list ect.

I’d look ASAP for venues. If they are willing to book this far out you can lock in the 2019 pricing!! We booked our venue a year and 6 months out so we got the 2018 pricing for our 2020 wedding and if we would have waited we wouldn’t have been able to afford the venue anymore with the price increase.

We will have just about a 2 year engagement also! Depending on your schedule, it wouldn’t hurt to research venues now! Prices will go up and some venues book 1-1.5 years out! And it really doesn’t hurt to start thinking about other things like guest list/vendors you want. Photographer is another one that books up pretty fast! I would wait on dress shopping until a year out, otherwise early planning can’t hurt (:

Im definitely a planner. I have already picked my bridal party and got my proposal boxes ordered, were having our engagement party in November so I plan on giving them their boxes there. I already have a venue I want my wedding at because they have a new rustic barn that has opened this year and im sure its already booked up so Im hoping I can get reserve it this far in advance

Ill just tell you what I did. I got my dress at 19 months which is early but it was fine for me, venue, officiant, and ceremony musicians at 18 months and bridal party proposals and decor at 18 months, florist at 14 months, engagement photos and photographer at 13 months, save the dates sent at 10 months, hmua at 10 months, catering at 9 months, trials, cake and rentals at 8 months, bridal shower at five months, dj and transportation at 4 months, invites sent at 3 months, bm dresses and ties ordered at 3 months (azazie has fast shipping), RSVPs due at 1 month. Some things I did early because I wanted to, some things I had to do early because I live across the country. At 2 months I will ship final gifts and decor and my dress and put aside money for the rehearsal dinner, at 1 month I’ll have final counts, seating chart, programs done as well as gather tip money.

I would caution you about picking your bridal party this far out. Relationships can change and a lot can happen in 2 years. I would wait until 6-8 months out.

FH and I also have a 2 years engagement as well! I’m a big planner so immediately after we got engaged in August 2018 (getting married on 102/20) I started researching lol. We booked our photographer a month after we got engaged and then the venue. I’ve already seen some vendors taking 2021 dates. So if you have the date decided and the means to, i’d definitely suggest locking down some of your vendors now so you have your top choices!

We were engaged for 19 months, these are some of the major milestones we did:

16-19 months out - tour venues, create guest list/count, decide on a few dates/time of year, finalize budget

14-16 months out - book venue & DOC, propose to bridesmaids, start registry & website

12-14 months out - book photographer, book HAMU, book florist

10-12 months out - shop for wedding dress, schedule & take engagement pictures, order save the dates, book DJ, finish website & registry, set up hotel blocks

8-10 months out - send out save the dates, book videographer & caterer, propose to groomsmen

6-8 months out - book dessert & officiant, start planning honeymoon

4-6 months out - decide on groom's apparel, set up rentals, focus on decor, order invites

2-4 months out - send out invites, order presents for bridal party & parents, book honeymoon

0-2 months out - finalize all vendor orders, finalize RSVP count, finalize honeymoon

I'm having a 2 year engagement as well (engaged August 2019-married October 2021) and I already found my dress, asked some bridesmaids to be in the wedding, and will be visiting our venue at the end of the month! I was told people are already booking and buying dresses for 2021 weddings so I think the earlier the better. It's better to not have to rush and be stressed Smiley smile I'm definitely appreciating the 2 year long engagement!
