What would you do if your venue all of sudden filed for bankruptcy!

Desiree, on January 22, 2016 at 1:43 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

This didn't happen to me, but 2 days ago here in Houston a venue closed down abruptly leaving brides high and dry. The venue has refused to give people back their money! I'm pissed for these people and my heart goes out for them. 1 lady said she already paid them 9 grande! Smh!!What would you do? Here's the link if you would like to read: http://www.khou.com/story/news/local/2016/01/21/wedding-venue-closure-leaves-brides-high-and-dry/79100340/

This happened with a popular venue in Brooklyn, too: http://nypost.com/2014/05/15/rebar-owner-busted-after-stiffing-wedding-couples/

I remember reading a few stories about local venues cutting the otherwise screwed couples a deal. There were also fundraisers held to help them get back their deposits and the wedding coordinators for the closed venue apparently offered their services for free: http://observer.com/2014/06/jilted-rebar-couples-may-soon-be-getting-their-happily-ever-afters/

Can't imagine how stressful it is, but it's nice to know others helped out.

I saw this. I am so mad for them. Imagine if your wedding was tomorrow. What the hell are you supposed to do? I didn't even look at this venue. However my venue is offering their services. So that makes me happy lol

This is the exact reason we are purchasing wedding insurance. I had never heard of it till I read the forums but told FH we will not put down another deposit till we buy insurance. That needs to come first. I hope it ends up being money wasted and am thankful I saw it on here. Those poor brides. I would probably have a mental break down.

This is why we bought wedding insurance too! I'm not chancing it. This happened at a venue in Connecticut a couple years ago.

Yep....I did three weddings at Rebar (the one in Brooklyn) before they closed, and to this day I'm thankful that all my couples got to have their weddings. (it was a terrific, funky place!).

You just never know what can happen to even the most seemingly stable venue. I recommend wedding insurance for EVERY couple.

I'm in NJ. We're looking at a blizzard for tomorrow. What would you do if it was your wedding day, besides freak out?

This has happened twice recently in my area.

This venue closed last April with NO notice. I'm not sure how the brides made out getting refunds.

This venue closed a few weeks ago and brides to be were sent letters with recommendations for other venues. They were given full refunds. It's sad because this was a very nice (and popular) venue.

I have actually seen this happen way too often, even with businesses that seem to be rocking it. The great thing is that most places feel for them and will work with them. As for any money with them most likely you will never see it again and if you do it will be years down the road.

My friends had a wedding scheduled at Rebar, and paid for in full by the bride's parents. It was really upsetting for them and they let us know that the wedding might not happen at all. They felt so bad about the parents being out all that money, because they had it saved they had paid in advance.

In the aftermath, a lot of other venues in the city offered deals. They had a morning wedding at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. It was like 11-5 and there was another wedding after. They had to cut some of the guests to fit a smaller space, and cut a lot of the extras like favors. They got wedding insurance for the second wedding. As far as I know, bride's parents just lost the money they had paid to Rebar.

Smh that's sad. I honestly will have to revisit the idea of insurance.
