What were your Catholic ceremony songs & readings?

Natasha, on September 8, 2015 at 4:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Hi Ladies,

I met with our priest and he told me that we should start picking our readings (I think it's 2?) and songs (3?). I've seen the options and he also told me what's most common but I'm curious what you all chose? Anything you loved? Anything you regretted?

Thanks!

We used Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring for the bridesmaids, Trumpet Voluntaire for my dad and I, Ave Maria for the visitation to Mary, our psalm was Pslam 34:2-9, our readings were Sirach 28:1-4, 12-16 and Ephesians 5:2, 21-33, and our gospel was Matthew 19:3-6. Then we exited to Joyful Joyful.

Our church gave us a book of wedding orientated readings to help guide our search. I would also check with your priest about music choices, we were not allowed to use the Bridal Chorus or the Wedding March since their origins don't quite align with sacramental ideals.

We're Lutheran, but we all walked into Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. The only solo we had was You Are For Me. It's not a hymn type of song, but it is a Christian song by Kari Jobe.

Our readings were Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (two are better than one but a cord of three is not easily broken) and Ephesians 5:21-33 (wives submit to your husbands and husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church).

We just had a full Catholic wedding with communion-

Songs- "Ava Maria", "Blessings", "Canon in D", "Grow old with Me, "Our Prayer" & "Joy"

We had 4 intro songs, processional, offering song, communion song, and recessional.

Readings- Sirach 26:14-, 13-16 and the ever popular Corinthians 12:31-13-89 and our Responsorial psalm was "like a seal on your heart".

I loved everything about our wedding. Our priest gave us a book to work from and our singers helped us with the song selection and responsorial psalm.

I was just picking all this out last night! We had a workbook and had to pick out nearly every part of the mass. It wasn't just the readings. So now I can't remember anything off the top of my head.

Is anyone else doing Ave Maria? We kind of want to cut it out of the ceremony but not sure how "optional" it is.

Kelli S, it's usually used during the visitation to Mary. If you're not doing that, I don't see why cutting it would be a problem. There are no required songs or readings for a Catholic ceremony, the spaces can be filled with whatever you chose (along with your church's approval, I would guess).

Sara- we are having a full mass as well! We originally didn't want to because my FH is not Catholic but since we are doing the ceremony in Mexico they are insisting on the full mass. Thankfully they agreed to do it in English! Were most of your guests Catholic?
