What was your bar ratio for beer:wine:liquor?

Kate, on February 22, 2023 at 12:51 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

I am seeing different open bar calculators. Some say 50% wine, 25% beer, 25% liquor. Some say 25% wine, 25% beer, 50% liquor.

Our wedding is May 28 in a warm climate. That is the Sunday of memorial weekend, so some people might drink less, some might drink more. The wedding will be outside, with the reception indoors.

What ratio did you order for your wedding and did it work out?

We purchased our alcohol through Total Wine and had a meeting with them to figure out how much of what to buy (and it included a wine tasting!) They used this calculator: https://www.evite.com/pages/party/drink-calculator/. We found it pretty accurate, though it also depends on your crowd - ours leaned more toward liquor than beer/wine so we had more of the latter left over, but Total Wine also accepts returns of unopened bottles of wine and complete cases of beer (even if the case was open) and we kept whatever leftover liquor for our home bar!

I would base it on your guest’s preferences if you know. I don’t know how large your guest list is. We provided our own because it was the cheapest option and we knew who on our list drink and what they primarily drink so we were able to base it that way

I agree with Taylor. This is going to depend a lot on your guests’ preferences. We didn’t provide our own alcohol (we had a full open bar that the venue provided). However, we saw the consumption at the end of the evening, and ours was roughly 64% liquor, 33% beer, and 3% wine. Obviously, we do not have a lot of wine drinkers in our crowd. If you know your groups preferences, I would base the numbers off that.

You saved my life with the Total Wine recommendation! I've been slightly panicking about supplying everything for our open bar since our venue doesn't provide anything. Thank you!!!

Every group is different so there is no one size fits all answer. You have to know and ask your own family and friends. Many posts we saw during planning said to serve beer and wine only with a signature drink optional and never any non alcoholic beverages offered. If we had done that, we would have wasted hundred of dollars because our guests don’t drink beer or wine. They prefer liquor as mixed/frozen/straight or non alcoholic beverages for those who don’t drink for personal reasons. The time of year is irrelevant.

Our percentage was 50% liquor and 50% non alcoholic.

Of course it depends on the group. It is still beneficial for me for hear other peoples’ experiences. I disagree that the season and temperature is irrelevant, but thanks for your reply.
