What was the funnest wedding you've been to and why?

Abby, on October 6, 2013 at 12:36 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

Alright, so. All the big stuff is in place. Venue, Fort Mason. Caterer, Pizza Truck. Band, a one man drummer/singer with a karaoke machine (super fun, see Les Edwins Show on youtube).

Now, I get to start getting creative!

When my little sister got married, she really focused on the guests and it created a great experience. And, since my wedding will be so intimate and so many people will be scrimping to travel, I feel like I need to make this night as much about them as me.

What are some of your favorite things you've enjoyed as a guest at weddings?

oxoxo, Abby

Family weddings. My relatives are crazy fun so anytime there is a family wedding and all of us cousins get together it creates a great time. Personally, I find that the people make the best weddings.

What makes weddings more fun for me is the company I am with - either my friends or my family.

The common denominator of my two favorite weddings I've been to has been a photo booth/photo station. SO MUCH FUN to be crazy and get pics taken with everyone. They are such a huge hit. Can't wait for ours at our wedding!! Smiley smile

When the bride and groom make a point of pulling everyone to the dance floor at some point in the evening. Sometimes family or friends don't necessarily know each other, or don't know each other well so any time you make an effort to get everyone included, I think people relax more and have a great time.

I also think funny speeches are great.

I'm not a big dancer, but when the dance floor is FULL! FH's family LOVEs to dance, and I was so surprised when we went to his cousins wedding how much everyone danced!

Also, if you do seating arrangements, thoughtful ones. All the cousins were sat together(we're all grown adults), opposed to adult cousins with their parents, and it gave us all a chance to catch up and really enjoy ourselves.

I love a wedding where the bride and groom are clearly enjoying their wedding, their guests, and their down. Their attitude seems to contagious and the guests also have a great time. I have also been to weddings where the couple (mostly the bride) seems stressed out for one reason or another. These weddings were not nearly as much fun for me.

Thanks you gals! Please keep 'em coming. I will make it a point to encourage dancing, although I'm a bit of a wallflower in that respect myself! Ha!

Personally I think personal touches make the guests feel special and I think that's what makes a wedding memorable, people forget the details likes cakes, the color of the dresses but they don't forget a feeling. So I am trying to make each guest feel special by personalizing their favors and putting a lot of though and effort into personal touches such as a personalized thank you note on the gift table and special thanks section in my program, personalized thank you's stamped on doilies (DIY) yet still to do because my wedding is a vintage victorian theme I choose doilies and these will be placed at each place setting. A tree for people to leave their thoughts and well wishes for us on or maybe postcards in a box haven't decided yet but personal touches are hat I am focusing on.

It's better in my experience to have karaoke for the first or last hour. It's always hard when you have a packed dance floor and a girl comes up and wants to sing jewel or some other sad song. Can you have people make their karaoke requests ahead of time and fit the appropriate songs in when appropriate? As a slow song when a slow on should be played?

Too funny - Great advice, TJ, but I just mean that our entertainer uses a karaoke machine! No fricken way I'm letting all my drunk friends slobber on the mic at my wedding!

My favorite wedding ever was my brother's. Jewish groom, Chinese bride. They had a Jewish ceremony and a Chinese reception. They had an amazing jazz band who also played the best Ha Va Nagillah I have heard in years and years. The dance floor was packed. The BM's speech was hilarious. A Chinese opera company performed. It was outstanding.

I've only been to one wedding since I was like 10, and it was a small wedding - about 50 people - and it was ALL family except for my FH and I, and one other couple our age. Also, everyone there was German except for the two of us.

What I thought was really amazing about the wedding was that the groom's parents gave us a lot of special attention. The only drinks available were beer and wine, but they bought a bottle of Polish vodka especially because my (Polish) FH was there, and we all took shots together. The groom's parents also dragged me and my FH out onto the dance floor and the mom was actually kind of trying to teach my guy how to dance.

I thought it was really special that they took the time to make us feel included and as part of the family. I guess that's more realistic at such a small wedding, but I think it's always important to make guests feel welcome and celebrated.

The most fun I've had at weddings are where there is a lot of dancing! I love to dance and it's the most fun when the bride & groom help keep the party going! My family has this tradition where the bride and groom stand in the middle of a big circle made by all of the guests and then everyone takes turns dancing with each of us. You dance for as long as you want, or until someone comes and cuts in! Usually it's to a salsa or meringue song, but I think anything upbeat will do!

The wedding I had the most fun in was my cousin Jennifer's back in 2009. I didn't bring a date with me and I was the youngest person at the wedding (17), her friends and her husbands friends were really amazing. One guy even pulled me on the dance floor and danced with me for a bit. Making sure that every has a great time is big, and even if you can't go around and ensure that for everyone- maybe you can ask some of your friends who are coming solo to help get people on the dance floor.

Hey ladies! I hadn't checked in for a while, thanks for the continuing advice!

What I'm getting is personal touches for guests and lots of dancing. We can make that happen. I will get the BM's on it, too, they're great ladies with a lot of social grace.

I named my MOH this week and am glad to say she's really into and going to teach the wedding party to dance "Shake Your Tail Feather" from the Blues Brothers - a song that my entertainer will ROCK! I think we'll do it right after first dance and make sure to grab guests onto the dance floor. It should get the party started! Really excited.
