What to wear wedding dress shopping

Holly, on January 21, 2016 at 4:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

I'm going on my first dress outing on Sunday with my mom. She asked if she should dress nicer or if a t-shirt and jeans would be okay. It wasn't something I had even considered. I assume I'll be trying things on most of the time anyway but what did you/your party wear to shop?

You can really wear whatever you want. My girls where wearing sun dresses when we want but only because it was a hot day and that is what they all ended up choosing.

For you, something that you can get in and out of easily with a substantial pair of underwear. Everyone else, whatever they want. My sisters didn't wear PJs but they didn't get super dressed up either, jeans and sweaters mostly.

I wouldn't be too concerned about how nicely you dress, but differently look presentable, especially if you are going to a higher end salon. DB? Anything goes. But I have to agree with Jeanne- for trying dresses its best to wear something easy on- easy off and solid, full coverage underwear. I wore sundresses, but it was also warm when I went.

    Jeans and shirt are fine.

but take a strapless bra and heels with you to try the dress on. Also take a hair tie so you can see how the dress will look with hair up and down. I'm horribly visual. I even had curled my hair and put some extra make up to get a semi idea of what the day of would look like.

I wore a sun dress, just something to keep me in the girly mood and that was I was already wearing my strapless bra/slip that I had without having to change. I found it made it much easier, just had to switch my boots for my heels when I got to the store.

Bring water! I'm telling you you get hot and so thirsty. I chugged two water bottles during the process. No one told me I should bring them but I'm a psycho with water bottles and thank god I am !

But wear light colored underwear you don't mind them seeing you in. I wore a strapless bra but they had a corset bra for me to wear.

Anything. I wore a dress because I was coming from work, but otherwise I probably would have just worn jeans and a blouse.

Keep in mind that you'll likely be pretty naked in front of the consultant, so if that weirds you out make sure to wear shapewear and other undergarments that you'll feel comfortable in.

I would say to wear a slightly colored underwear - this sounds weird but bear with me! I wore light pink undies and it was helpful b/c I could tell how thick the material was. If I couldn't see the slightly colored undies, I knew that nude would be fine. I would also say to bring anything for your bust you would like. I am small busted and so I brought cutlets. This also has to do with how comfortable you are being topless in front of your consultant. I don't own a strapless bra that is comfortable/fits, and I wasn't terribly concerned with modesty in the dressing room. Going braless with just the cutlets worked well for me because I got a really good sense of how the dress fit (but I am also small busted). I would also say wear a little bit of makeup - at least some blush. It will make you feel better and give you an overall picture of the dress on you as you would look on your wedding day.

ETA: I have heard that if your party dresses slightly nicer, that many salons will take you more seriously and not think you are playing dress up. It might be unfair, but I have heard this from several people including former bridal consultants.

Sorry, old fashioned here. Should dress nice. Not like you are grocery shopping. A nice pair of dress jeans is ok with a nice shirt. No jeans with holes or old t-shirt. I just think it's a place that should be dressed up a bit more. As a mom, I wore a pair of dress pants with a dress shirt.

Thanks all! My only strapless bra is really tight on me so I might bring it as a backup but not wear it unless I have to. And I like the suggestion of darker underwear because I do NOT want to have a see-through dress!

I wore yoga pants and a white tank top, with a regular nude bra and undies. My salon had a relatively private changing room, but I was going with my FMIL and F-grandmother-IL so I didn't want to get down to undies and wanted an outfit I could feasibly wear under a dress if I couldn't take it off.

Because my room was private and I was zipped up before family saw me, I ended up wearing undies only with the dresses, with no problem.

I wouldn't worry about your outfit, but consider a nude bra and undies. However, make sure you wear your hair somewhat what it will be like for the wedding. If you want an undo, wear a bun. If your hair will be mostly down, keep in down. Keep it curly or straight or whatever. It could make a big difference with how the neckline looks.

I wore a dress so it was easy to take off and on, with trying stuff on. I didn't think it would matter what color underwear since I think wedding dresses have a lot of layers. However, they aren't all like that. Nude undies are a good idea, and a strapless bra is good too. Some bridal shops have a strapless bra you can borrow if you didn't wear one. The consultant was in the dressing room with me and put every dress on me.

I wore jeans, a nice blouse & heels one day, a dress and dressy sneakers another day. Honestly can't remember what my family & BP wore, just whatever they were comfortable with. Definitely wear simple underwear (I went with the seamless kind to avoid any potential pantyline problems) and a strapless bra. Often the sales ladies would have me take the bra off even, depending on how it looked with the dress.
