What to Wear for our Engagement Photos on the Beach

nikg9, on June 9, 2010 at 8:51 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

Hey ladies! Our photographer said to wear dark colors for our photo session next Monday, 6/14. We are taking pics on the beach and boardwalk in Pt Pleasant, NJ. Any suggestions? Should we both wear black or a nice color combo? And jeans?

I think you should wear a pretty chiffon dress in a deep teal or purple. It would still give color while being dark, and the fabric would be beautiful in the wind. Personally, I don't really like black in photos. It's too boring and doesn't have any dimmension.

Thank you, I agree. I think black is boring too. I love the teal/purple idea. My bridesmaids are going to wear teal:-)

I really don't like black for your e-session photos...

For your FH, jeans are always a good choice... Khakis would do the job too...

For you, a dress not too short/not too long (about knee high) would do the trick.. .

As far as colors... Your photographer is most likely trying to avoid bright colors that strongly reflect light... The main colors to avoid are bright red and white...

Blues, purple, dark red usually photograph nicely... So do brown and orange...

Here are a couple of the E-Sessions I've done, so that you get an idea of colors...

I also have one where they both decided to wear all black, and I can send you the link if you are interested in looking at that...

One thing.. For the beach photos, the time of the day is critical... Make sure your photos are taken either at first light; or right when the sun is going down...

Me and my FH are doing the same thing on LBI, but were not going to where black. You should wear colors that look good on both of you. And if you going to do beach picture you should always do bright colors.

Also, it's important that you two don't wear the same grayscale colors if you want black and white photos. What I mean is while blue, green and purple all look different in color, in black and white they can look the same because of the grayscale translation. Then you can't tell where you end and FH begins.

You could maybe coordinate with your wedding colors and I think you should wear a dress that flows.

@nik- I was wondering the same thing for our E-session. We're having ours in July on the beach/boardwalk in Asbury Park. We didn't get any specifications on colors to wear from the photog., however. Thanks for posting this!

Oh, one more thing... This has nothing to do with clothing; but has everything to do with your photos... HAVE FUN! really, that is key!! If you have fun and have a good time, it shows on the photos... Don't be afraid to do anything silly, sexy, crazy, etc... ;-)

    Just be yourself...

I've had couples wear all kinds of colors. You can check out the latest e-session on my blog. They brought a couple of changes of clothes. http://www.emindeeimagesblog.com

Also, I have more e-sessions on my website:

If your photographer allows clothing changes, I'd bring a couple...it gives you more flexibility.

Like Cesar said, have a great time...I call them Big Makeout Sessions! Smiley smile lol

But nik, your photographer is right about darker colors. with all the sun exposure on the beach, lighter colors make you blend in for the pics. dark ones will help you stand out despite the glare. but suggestions? dont do what i did! lol. i wore a really cute vest over a tank top, and it looks cute in person, but they were the same color so it kinda looked like my shirt was all crazy. so nothing that will stick out at a weird angle. also, make sure not to wear a skirt or something that youll constantly have to pull a marilyn monroe with. lol. besides that, have fun!

    Kaitlin, cool photos! Smiley smile

It really depends on the time of day as to how your clothing can accent, help or hinder. Believe it or not, white & khaki on the beach look great and don't make you blend in...like I posted above, check out my blog...you'll see the couple wearing white & khaki...and it looks great. Dark colors will also look great, too, but don't feel limited. Have a great time! Smiley smile
