What to send with the invitation?

April, on August 14, 2019 at 1:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
I know my wedding is about a year away, but I wanted to get some pricing for invitations. I was looking at different websites and need this question answered: what do I send out with the invitation? I planned on doing the invitation with the RSVP card (pre-stamped). We are having a buffet dinner and the reception is the same as the ceremony. Is a reception card necessary? The invite will include our names, the venue and address, the date and time of the ceremony. The reception will be BYO alcohol, so I thought I would add that to the bottom of the invite (so people can hang it on the fridge and remember to bring it the day of the wedding). The RSVP card will ask how many will attend or can't attend at all.

Also, what is the appropriate way to let your guest know they have a +1? A few coworkers and friends are invited and we want to give them a +1, but don't want to assume who they would want to bring. I would address the invite to " Mr. John Smith" or whoever, but how do I let them know we have left room for them to bring a +1? And what is a polite way to ask who they're bringing so we can fill out the table settings with their name instead of "Guest"?

We had one invite for our wedding (ceremony and reception). We had our stamped & addressed RSVP card & envelope. We had a details card with our two hotel blocks (front and back). We had one more details card with transportation information (we provided transportation & the venue was in a rural area). That one was either one sided or the back had information about the kid's room, kid's meal & venue policies (we only sent those to families with kids under 10).

Warning: you'll get some negative feedback about having a BYO alcohol wedding. It's not super common and can be considered tacky depending on the person. However (IMO), I'd prefer that vs. a dry wedding for sure! Just warning since I've seen a lot of people get hard feedback about BYO anything to a wedding.

I don't think a separate reception card is necessary for you. I would include a separate insert card with your wedding website, and the BYO alcohol blurb.

We didn't include "plus ones". If someone was in a relationship, we invited both by first & last name (not "guest" or "plus one") so the invite was addressed that way. The RSVP card said "___ out of ___ attending" and we filled out the second line with how many were invited. If you are just giving open ended plus ones, I would address the invite "John Smith and Guest" and put the "___" with "2" on the RSVP card. The RSVP card typically says "M" or "Name" so they would fill out the name of their plus one.

This is how I did mine. I had my invite and rsvp with stamped envelope. I had a details card that had the rehearsal dinner invite on it and our website. A card for hotel blocks. My envelope was addressed to Ms. Jane Smith and Guest and then on the rsvp card there is a line that says Name(s)____

My FH and I are from the woods of Vermont and a lot of our relatives and guests are... rednecks (to put it nicely). Doing a cash bar or open bar isn't an option for cost and their isn't a local company who does bar service, but we're gonna want to drink! We thought doing it BYOB would allow people to bring what they want and as much as they want. We have the venue for the 3 day weekend so people can pitch a tent if they want to go all out. We're a pretty young couple and some of our friends are speed daters to put it nicely. We want to encourage them to bring a guest if they want but want assume they'll want to bring who they currently are dating. But I like the idea of putting a ___ out of 2 on the RSVP card so they know they can bring someone if wanted. I also like the idea of a detail card, so people know about the BYOB, brunch the next morning, and all of our other details.

    Thanks for your ideas!!

I like this idea too! It asks all the questions I want the guest to answer and puts it in a classy way. Thanks!!

I'm totally fine with BYOB, trust me! I just didn't want other comments to surprise you if they are negative ones (fingers crossed there aren't)!

We sent just a flat invitation that had the website and a pre-stamped RSVP card. Our wedding was all in one location with a buffet dinner; so no need for a reception card. Addressing them was fairly informal to match our ceremony.
