What to do with the smashed glass that is not a mezuzah?

Mary, on January 12, 2011 at 7:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

We are having a Jewish ceremony, as my finacé was raised Jewish, it's important to his family, and I was raised without any religion. He's not especially religious now, and does not want to put a mezuzah on our door (or really do anything that screams "Jewish").

I'm wondering if people have ideas of what to do with the glass shards other than making them into a mezuzah. I have already seen the ornate picture frames with the tubes for the shards, as well as the cake plates, and lucite cubes.

I'm hoping for something not horribly expensive and more classic and classy than showy and ungapatch. I'd like to have the shards as a special memory, but I'm having a hard time finding a way to work it into our rather modern and straight lined home.

Could you take some of the more interesting pieces of broken glass to a jeweler to make into a necklace or something?

Possibly make them into a wind chime?

We live in the city, so wind chimes are out, and I don't wear jewelry (other than my engagement ring). Thanks for the ideas, though.

Maybe you could do a DIY stone to go by your front door?

We live in a bad neighborhood of the city.... Outdoor things won't work.

I guess I was just hoping for a basic fillable picture frame (that's not plastic) or similar objet (insert italics) in the under $50 range.

Ha! I'm not Jewish, but I was very pleased to get a beautiful glass one for Christmas!

Could you take it to a glass blower & have them incorporate it into a blown glass (not mosaic) vase? (I live in Dale Chiluly country, so glass artisans are easy to find here.)

They have edgier type picture frames and even glasses that the glass can be put into.

We are now looking into a glass fusing/slumping (I don't really understand the difference) class or workshop to turn our shards into a plate or shallow bowl. I'm hoping that works out! It's about $15 for the class, which is much cheaper than any of the picture frames or candle holders, and will allow us to create something that is both meaningful and useful to us.
