what to do with my Mom's veil? (it's not good...)

Sarah, on July 10, 2017 at 12:12 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

EDIT- now with pics

My mother has been talking about the idea of me wearing her veil for while now, but wasn't able to find it. I'm not really a veil person, but I told her whatever, if she finds it I'll wear it. In the meanwhile I settled into the idea of not wearing one and ended up liking the idea of no veil quite a lot.

Out of nowhere, she suddenly found it, and... it's not good. 1983 - poofy with a huge blusher - a crown of squished plastic flowers, it's rough. The color also doesn't match my dress at all.

I feel like a bad daughter because I know how much it means to her, but it just won't work. She says she's okay with me modifying it, but I'm not sure what to do with it, considering I really don't want to wear a veil at all. What else can I do with it? Sew a bit into the dress? I can't think of anything else, and I would love to incorporate it, but it's really not my style. Help

I wore my moms veil. It also had a white plastic flower crown of some sort. We removed that and added a comb but the color was a pretty good match to my dress. Do you have pictures?

Could you take the material to someone who could make her veil into a new veil? One that could compliment your dress more?

My mom asked me to wear her 1980's style dress...i totally get how you feel. Plus, long heavy sleeves on a beach in July? Hell No!

As for the veil, what if you wrapped the tulle around your bouquet handle?

Can you make it into a birdcage or maybe send it to The Garter Girl and she can make a Garter out of it?

I like the ideas of either wrapping your bouquet in the tulle, or having a garter made out of it

(A pic of the dress, for reference) - I like the bouquet wrapping idea! I hadn't thought of that!

Do you know what we do ALL of the time (and by that, I mean 40% of the time)? The bride brings us mom's veil (or a piece of her gown), and we use that fabric in fashioning the fabric base of her wedding bouquet.

Honey, if you don't want to wear that veil, you don't have to. I'm not a big fan of "it's your day", but when it comes to your bridal attire and your ceremony, oh yeah, it's YOUR day. You have every right to do whatever you want to -- your choice, mom's veil, grandma's veil, your aunt's veil, or no veil. However, if you want to honor your mom, and as I said, lots of brides do, ask her if you can give the veil to your florist so that she can cut some of it and add it to your bouquet handle. Her other option is to put it back up in the attic, intact (as it continues to yellow), for another 30 years.

Ha- thanks @LaurenK! The dress is from Blush by Hayley Paige!

But seriously - the veil just is NOT going to work with this dress. oof.

If you'd consider it, try making it into a real flower crown. Maybe a skilled florist could strip off the fake flowers and make a pretty one with real flowers. You could cut off the tulle and use it to wrap your bouquet!

What about making fingerless gloves out of it? Or a bouquet wrap?

Agreed with all the suggestions. A bird cage veil would work perfect with that dress. Or having the base of your flowers wrapped with it. Please alter it. Your dress is too gorgeous for the current veil.

I'm in a similar situation! However my mom and I agreed that the flower crown had to go. I have a strand of pearls that was given to me by my Godfather when I made my confirmation into our church (! was twelve) and is now too small for me. We're taking my veil to a seamstress to have it re-purposed into a more modern veil. I am going to take the extra strand of pearls from my godfather and have them made into a comb for my hair and then have it attached as a more modern veil.

Re-purposing is your best option whether you have it made into a new veil or you have it made into something else!

(We may save the flower crown for the flower girl as it is still in good condition with white flowers and small fake pearls which would go with what I am wearing and look cute on her!)

Can you incorporate it into your bouquet?

I'm having a similar problem. My mom wanted me to wear her dress and veil. Cliche 80s fashion. I think we came to a mutual agreement that I will use the netting in our future child's crib.
